Dan also beat Donskoy in three straight sets in the 2013 Davis Cup tie, winning the fifth rubber and the tie, a complete shock win over the much higher ranked Russians.
SF: (1/WC) Daniel Evans WR 70 defeated Go Soeda (JPN) WR 191 by 4 & 2 in an hour & ten minutes
*****
Final: (1/WC) Daniel Evans WR 70 vs (13) Evgeny Donskoy (RUS) WR 148 (CH = 65 in July 2013)
The Russian is exactly two weeks older than Dan. The head-to-head is one apiece, with Dan winning their first encounter in three sets in an Italian Futures event on clay in 2010 (!) & Donskoy the more recent one, the Vancouver Challenger in 2013, also in three sets.
Probably doesn't count in the ATP head to head but there was also a rather famous Davis Cup win for Dan over Donskoy in Coventry, also in 2013. I had to leave early and missed it, not knowing the result until I stepped off the plane in Alicante when Steven texted me the result. Dan won in straight sets that day 4, 4 & 1, in the deciding rubber.

To my eternal shame, I'd completely forgotten about that, but the outcome of Davis Cup rubbers tends not to linger in my memory. You have more reason than I to recall it, Bob.
I suppose adding a 'who is' after 'final' and before 'chasing' would have eliminated all doubt, but yes, I was referring to Donskoy, as was the case against Troicki last week.

I seem to remember play starting at midday on the Sunday and my flight from Birmingham was scheduled for10pm. I thought I had plenty of time to watch both matches that day. But Wardy's 5 set marathon over Tursunov lasted over 5 hours and so I had to leave after that match. It was a great experience though.
Agreed, poor scheduling to leave the showpiece until the end when theres a risk of the days play going so late. Arguably the women could have foregone the deciding set and settled their match by toss of a coin instead.
I'll take the bait. Regardless of Dan being a Brit (or a bloke), Garcia-Vekic was absolutely the showpiece event of the day with it being a full WTA event rather than a Challenger event, and the tournament needed a good, uninterrupted final like that after the likes of Sascha Bajin needless public criticism, despite the very testing circumstances throughout.
Excellent match between two top 30 players with much of their career ahead of them, and a worthy winner in Garcia. I'd have preferred it to have ended it in 2, but there's no way they should be playing second fiddle to anyone.
