This time it's 4-1 to Emma in the second set. Let's hope Magda Linette doesn't effect a matching turnaround! It isn't beyond the realms of possibility.
Neil, can I give you a top up? Your glass looks more than half empty.
HaHa. Great win for Emma. On paper it was a hard match against the number 20 seed (and as far as I can make out just outside the top 20 in the world) but Emma varied her tactics well and after a rusty start she just got stronger and stronger and showed her class. I was impressed by the finish.
Linette was playing very messy tennis, but Emma was serving really well, hitting consistently and some great defence. Best ranking win since?
Yes I agree Magda seemed to fall apart. She was beaten mentally before she was beaten physically but that's not to take anything away from Emma, it's all part of the game. They say sport is largely mental at the end of the day.
Thats a great win for Emma! My father in law keeps on saying that Emma is a one hit wonder so this result will be something to argue back with tomorrow at Sunday lunch ;)
Emma played a great match there, she is certainly not a one hit wonder. Was really good listening to Laura Robson and Annabell Croft on the comms as well they give so much more insight into the technical and physical side of the game than so many others. Laura of course can relate so much to Emma given the age she broke through at and probably more importantly injuries especially the wrist one.
Dont see any reason why she cant go deep here. If shes fit shes a top 20 player, a better player now than when she won the US Id say.

I can certainly see her being a better player once she hopefully stays fit and well and gets a consistent run of tournaments in.
I'd say for now, when she plays, she's certainly unsurprisingly not as consistently good as she was then. But I remain very optimistic that that will come.
If Emma can get past 13th seed Haddad Maia or Sinakova (45) then her next opponent would likely be Swiatek and I can't see Emma being ready to beat Iga. If she had gone deep in a recent earlier tournament then maybe, but she has too many issues to beat Iga in a few days time. That said Emma does seem to rise to the challenge of facing impossible odds. Going into the US Open as a qualifier and winning was impossible. People said it would be impossible for her to beat Serena but she did and then they said Serena was past it but Azerenka would be different and she only lost two games to Azerenka.
