Emma played a great match there, she is certainly not a one hit wonder. Was really good listening to Laura Robson and Annabell Croft on the comms as well they give so much more insight into the technical and physical side of the game than so many others. Laura of course can relate so much to Emma given the age she broke through at and probably more importantly injuries especially the wrist one.

Dont see any reason why she cant go deep here. If shes fit shes a top 20 player, a better player now than when she won the US Id say.

I can certainly see her being a better player once she hopefully stays fit and well and gets a consistent run of tournaments in.

I'd say for now, when she plays, she's certainly unsurprisingly not as consistently good as she was then. But I remain very optimistic that that will come.

I think I commented at the time that I thought the US Open win was fortuitous in a lot of ways. The draw especially and everything went her way and landed in. Staying healthy is the main thing as it is for everyone but I see a better player than in 2021.

Thats a great win for Emma! My father in law keeps on saying that Emma is a one hit wonder so this result will be something to argue back with tomorrow at Sunday lunch ;)

Well, that's a win-win biggrin

Great match, Emma

And taken on the first match point - I take back anything I said about British women and closing out

If Emma can get past 13th seed Haddad Maia or Sinakova (45) then her next opponent would likely be Swiatek and I can't see Emma being ready to beat Iga. If she had gone deep in a recent earlier tournament then maybe, but she has too many issues to beat Iga in a few days time. That said Emma does seem to rise to the challenge of facing impossible odds. Going into the US Open as a qualifier and winning was impossible. People said it would be impossible for her to beat Serena but she did and then they said Serena was past it but Azerenka would be different and she only lost two games to Azerenka.

Totally agree Peter.  For now though, whatever happens from here I think it has been a good tournament for Emma with these two wins considering how she came into the event.

Although Haddad is ranked in the world  top 15  she is yet to reach the 3rd round of any Grand Slam singles. However she did win Nottingham and Birmingham in 2022.

I saw very little of that match but The Guardian are reporting that Emma was shaking out her wrist a lot and that she had the trainer on to give her a painkiller for it...... is that what other people saw too?

Yes I saw that. She did look a bit uncomfortable for a while, but after the painkillers kicked in she was hitting the ball beautifully and didnt look to be in pain. Of course the worry now is whether she might have aggravated the problem

Thanks, SuperT

It doesn't sound perfect......but the team will be well experienced (unfortunately) in dealing and playing with injuries so hopefully they know what they're doing

And makes it even more important that she won in two

A really strong performance from Emma. Probably her best win since the US open. Linette wasn't very good at times but Emma was striking the ball well and her movement was excellent.
The wrist still looks an issue but let's hope she can stay fit. The next round will be tougher as the rallies will be longer. I think Emma will need to up her first serve percentage to have a decent chance but she can definitely win if she plays to her best standard.

There was a mens match before Emma's which, if I have got the right match, has just finished. So Emma should be on in 15 mins or so.

A really promising start for Emma, first set to love followed by a break, she's not messing about.

You can always tell when Emma is playing well as the big first serve is key to her success. The rest of her game has always been solid.
