Week 7 - ITF W25 - Glasgow, UK (indoor hard)

A truly dreadful volley by the Danish girl gave Eliz 3-1

But then Eliz played way too tentatively and her opponent cracked her backhand winner

But they turn at 4-2 to Eliz (important to win the point before they turn.....)

Eliz finishes on an ace

She did great to get that match

The youngster is a very good junior, got a lot more potential, will go a lot further with her tennis, but is still rather emotional and a little eratic at this level

Well done, Eliz

Eliz sat far too far back for a lot of the match, too central. The Dane got herself all worked up when she lost the break, very emotional, telling her (French) coach she had no power and nothing left. I thought he was great at not indulging the behaviour while also not ignoring it, giving her a few simple commands to get her to re-focus. The Dane deserved it overall I thought but Eliz did was she does so well, kept it simple, played to get strengths, stayed calm and made herself hard to beat. She got some very good serves in towards the end too which helped, not necessarily all that powerful but well placed and not the easiest to read.

I think the Dane has good potential if she can control and channel her emotions better. The other Dane on court Helmi is shrieking horrendously too (against Sato who has a fun almost traditional old -school Japanese game: short, two handed both sides and flat, but with a wicked chop angle slice).

Oh, and Bayerlova is absolutely atrocious.

Both Bates' watching Talia closely, slightly nervous that means Jeremy is working with her... Maia just that bit more experienced and tighter (in a good way) in the close moments. Talia has the better highs but the lower and more frequent lows.

Svendsen was the one who had multiple meltdowns yesterday, I wonder if every match of hers is like this

Curious schedule that they play all 1st round matches today, but the final is scheduled for Sunday. Doesn't that mean either splitting a future round over 2 days or having a day with no singles?

Yeah I assumed it must be a Saturday final. Odd to play full first round in both today, going to be a late evening for some.

Ella not playing well. She looks a bit out of her depth which she shouldn't be/isn't. Just nothing clicking in these early games.

0-4*

Ella gets hit with a ball from the next court during the sit-down, which rather sums her day up.

0-6

My delusional, wishful thinking side is telling me Ella simply spent the first set noting the patterns of the other player Grand Slam Djokovic style

I generally don't like wildcards in tennis. However, md wc against a qualifier doesn't help surely, with the qualifier warmed up and confident from two wins on the same courts and the wc by definition, playing in a tournament above their current ranking (notwithstanding their potential). Surely better to go in through qualifying based on ranking, or qwc if needed?

Ella has not been playing well in recent matches in the Juniors. It was Ranah who impressed at the Australian Open

Eden playing well so far, 5-5 v Ozgen. But annoyed with herself for not breaking Ozgen for the first set and now having an extended argument with the umpire, what about I'm not sure.

Heather through 6-4 6-3. Good first set. Sramkova was struggling with an issue from mid way through the second but Hev stayed nice and tidy.

Ferro next who came through a very good quality battle with Stresnakova.

Eden has sort of imploded since missing the set points. I think the argument with the umpire was as much about that as anything else.

Eden's mental game is so poor at times (a lot of the time, let's be honest). She just cannot stay positive or start afresh after a disappointment.

Such a shame because she's playing some really nice tennis.
