They play away in Peru, on clay, and frankly will probably get slaughtered. All the Peruvians are around 600 in the rankings at home against a relatively rag tag Irish team. But good look lads and I hope they prove me wrong !
18 months ago Ireland played Davis cup against Monaco, the doubles pair included Hugo Nys, who beat the Irish pair 3 and 4. Nys plays the AO final tonight
The only good thing about this diabolical new Davis Cup format is in the lower groups they expanded it so it wasnt just done on region so now you get funky ties like Mexico vs Chinese Taipei, Lithuania vs Pakistan or Jamaica vs Estonia. In the old regionalised format I feel like everyone was just playing the same teams too often.

Yes, it is much more entertaining- not very good for carbon footprint though !

I think this is a mere drop in the ocean for tennis
The Colombian number 2, Nicholas Mejia, lost early in a challenger this week, losing in qualies initially
And then got an LL before losing last 16. Hes ranked outside top 200. But he seems to save it all for big Davis Cup. Last season, Colombia lost to USA and Mejia took a set off Korda and took Tommy Paul to 5 and 6. The season before, 2021, Colombia reached the DC Finals event and he lost in 3 to Tiafoe and 3 to Sonego, both real fights.
So he could be dangerous to whoever we put against him.

BBC iplayer 8pm Fri and 5pm Saturday, fab. To be played outdoor clay at 2566m above sea level with unpressurised balls. A really tricky tie for GB, where's Kedders when we need him..
I'm thinking this will be closer than it looks on paper. You would think that the singles games against their no.2 should be relatively comfortable for whoever we pick but the clincher could be how well their no.1, Galan's performs.
I'd love to see Jack play but in reality since the format is only 3sets now he might only get a dead fifth rubber if at all.
Got to be Dan and Cam on day one. Hope Evo gets his much wanted dubs chance with Skupski. Salisbury + Skupski was a real let down and Salisbury + Murray better but less that expected in the end. Salisbury probably deserves to be dropped but these conditions and location will be a real test. Looking forward to this one.
I think we have a better chance of winning three singles points than a doubles one, so just put out skupski and Salisbury and hope for the best, no point getting Evo tired when we need him in singles.
Just a bit! Very good for our singles now. So certainly should be winning this, though I am rather more optimistic about the doubles anyway than some seem to be. Been off their top level yes, and our current best pairing is questionable, but we still have ruddy good doubles players.

Also makes selection easier - if cam and Dan play and win day one, no need to put Dan in doubles, stick with Joe and Neal. We will one of the other singles whatever happens in doubles
