Week 18 - ITF W25 - Nottingham, GB Hard

Sonay only dropped 11 points in the decider and won 4-6 7-5 6-0 smile

She plays Eden's conqueror Stollar in the SF.

Well, I guess Sonay will have to just go on and and win the whole damn thing, given she's our only direct GB interest here now.

A definite pattern to Sonay's game of starting slow but finishing like a train.

From what Ive seen of Sonay she looks quite strong and fit. The female version of Cam in that respect maybe, he also finishes strong in a lot of his wins. Would anyone be surprised if she did an Emma to a lesser extent and ended up inside the top 100 by year end?

Yes, very. But then we all saw Emma's exploits coming last year - not!

I just think great as Sonay has done she has now played enough ( her short term high going forward is less a guess than Emma's was ) to say to me she is very unlikely to find that level by year end. But certainly very much on the up.

Well by my calculations, it only needs 13x 25k titles to make top 100 ;)

Only 11 more to go!

Nailed on.

Important grass season for her though, where she should probably be reasonably high up the WC pecking order, and it will be interesting to see what events she ends up playing (and how she gets on), assuming points are actually awarded...

A decent draw or two, and the odd win, and she could certainly climb up even more significantly, but yeah, top 100 does seem miles away at the moment.

Top 200 seems plausible if she keeps winning.

She has climbed 500 places in three and a half months so who knows how high she will go by the end of the year.

Target 1 should be US open qualifiers I would have thought. Would need a few big results on the grass but is a definite target.

SF here is going to be very tough but a chance to see exactly what level Sonay is at.

Yes, I would have said that's the goal at the moment. I'd only marked her years ago as potential top-200, never 100, but she's already surpassed my expectations (not in terms of ranking itself but in how she's achieved it) so carry on, Sonay !

But she does seem to have a rather restricted schedule - she says her plans are very much based on her own well-being etc which is great and as it should be but it also rather implies - and as borne out - that she may not play a full schedule, which makes it harder to rise up the rankings.

On the other hand, if you play 16 tournaments a year, and manage to average 20 points in each of them, you reach the top 200. Perhaps players should be doing more training blocks and fewer, better, tournaments?

For reference, points for a 25k semi (18), a 60k quarter (15) or a 80k quarter (21), a 125k R2 (15) and 250k R2 (30) all come close to that 20 point threshold.

Yes, absolutely, jb, it's a good point.

And a key question that they all have to consider at the start of the year when doing their provisional schedules.

Serena Williams was very much for it, and it didn't do her ranking any harm

It's all a question of degree, I guess, but it is a little caveat in my mind..... maybe wrongly.....
