Controversial I know but if I was Emma I would skip this. She is struggling to stay fit as it is with limited matches and this seems like a potential risk of further injury playing in a largely meaningless competition in terms of us having any chance of progress.
I disagree, she needs matches, she should get 2 matches here, something she may not get in upcoming tour events on the clay if the draw doesn't work in her favour. No points to worry about, just a bit of competitive practice against players she is very likely to meet on tour.
In her senior career Emma is yet to play any match on clay so the BJ King Cup would mark her debut on clay. It is many years since the Cup did not feature either Heather or Jo in the squad. At a guess either 2010 or 2011. Checked up and Heather made her debut in 2011. So 2010 last year there was either no Heather or Jo

So glad to see Sonay in the squad. Off the LTA radar for so long with no support from them. Makes you wonder how many others there are that get overlooked.
I wonder if it will get Jodie angry enough to push on as well?
She doesn't need to be angry, she needs a come to Jesus, see the light type realisation that losing focus in matches goes against her, not for her. Like Andy. And get a new coaching team if she is with the LTA lot.
Playing for your nation is never a meaningless exercise. There's much to take from the tie, the practice and preparation in a team environment, competing on an unfamiliar surface, in a partisan atmosphere, and the pressure of the matchplay. It'll be a brilliant experience, whatever the final result.
Whats particularly galling for Jodie is that rather than selecting her for the the 5th place on the team, it has been left unfilled. So its not that there is no space on the team for her because of players selected ahead of her.
