Eden Silva WR486 v Freya Christie WR643

Harriet Dart WR146 v Sonay Kartal UNF/ITF1006

That was a pretty enjoyable first day, and the late 8.45pm or so finish in the Eden match highlighted the competitive nature of the day. All of them were pretty competitive, bar Jodie vs Eliz. Emma and Eden were relatively comfortable, but their opponents had their moments, and were both up a break at some point.
Good comeback from Naomi, I wasn't sure if I saw that coming after the first set, but she did well once she got that first break, although the MTB could make things interesting come the final table.
Eden vs Freya probably looks the pick of tomorrow's matches for me, and it's Court 1 as TA says, so the women should get the commentary and the better production this time.
As an aside, in games won lost , how do they count MTB's? Is it 1-0 effectively as a single game, or would it be 10-5 (for example) ? I assume the former but havent seen and different tournaments seem to use different rules?
Poor Eliz, at least she got a couple of games in the second set. Tough start for her, but realistically, her week here isn't going to be defined by matches against Emma and Jodie, she needs to make sure she beats Nadia, and then picks up a win against either Beth and/or Emily, finish 3rd or 4th in the group and therefore make the 5th-8th playoffs instead of the 9-12. She is 3-1 here vs Nadia, 2-1 vs Beth, 1-0 vs Emily, so a winning record against them all, so she will have a chance, but hopefully she's not too demoralised after those two heavy defeats.
I did feel for her when I saw the OOP, the 2 best players by a country mile as your first 2 matches is a bit ****e but if she wants to succeed thats the minimum level she needs to achieve so a good marker to judge her progress.

Yeah, it's a strange one. She's been good for the tournament because she's played regularly, always fights, and is capable of getting some decent wins as referenced in the above H2Hs, but at the same time, she lost fairly easily to Naomi 3 times here (can't get near the serve), Holly the other day, and also lost emphatically to Jodie in the first week, so not just a case of matches catching up. There'll likely be a ceiling there, but hopefully she can get up to that 500-600 range to match some of her recent wins, but any hope she had of reaching the SFs were effectively ended as soon as she was put in a group with 2 of the big 3, as she can get overpowered.
It likely wouldn't have made any difference to the end outcome, as you do have to play everyone at some point, but I'm sure she would have rather have had Beth's start of Emily and Nadia to open things up. Plus, there's probably more chance of injuries/withdtawals/retirements later in the week, so you could end up with a weaker late replacement, although here's hoping that won't be the case.
On a different note, I've now given up on finding out if Emily Arb was considered a WC here or not. I thought Abigail might have mentioned whether she got in via a WC or by total points scored in the intros, like Cav did with Emma in the first match, but it wasn't mentioned. It really is strange that there's been no mention whatsoever as to how she officially qualified.
Naomi beat Emily Arb 6-2 7-6(3) - decent fightback in the second from Emily, but a second win for Naomi.
Poor Freya, a double break up against Eden, but ended up losing the set 7-6(2). That's a third tight, hr+ set for her this week, and she's lost them all.
Mind, it couldn't have gone much better for Freya after that post, Freya won the second set 6-0 in less than 30 mins, and then 10-1 in the TB to take the match.
Group A is fairly open now, well certainly the likely chase for 2nd anyway.

The plot thickens. Apparently Emily only found out by email on Saturday that she had qualified.
Yeah, that is strange. So she seemingly did qualify after Olivia and Victoria both lost on Saturday. Holly may well have been ineligible, despite both 18 year old Sonay and 17 year old Emma participating this week, but I see they ignored my tweet last night, and still haven't updated the tables from last week. A simple sentence like Emily qualified after Holly was unable to compete would have been nice, but it is what it is I guess. Just seems to be a make stuff up as we go along, and give as little info out as possible policy going on.
It'll be even worse if Holly comes in as a late replacement first alt at some stage, ha.

I was just thinking, Emily never seems to get soundly beating, well domestically anyway. I've just checked and she has lost 9 times during this British swing, and 7 of those were MTBs and the other was a 6-7 6-7 defeat to Naomi.
Obviously a few of those MTB defeats were in matches she'd have been expecting to win, like Alice, Nadia etc. but still reasonably promising signs that she hadn't been overwhelmed often.
