SF:  (2) Andy Murray WR 3 defeated (4) Kei Nishikori (JPN) WR 4 by 3 & 0

*****

Final:  (1) Novak Djokovic (SRB) WR 1 vs (2) Andy Murray WR 3

The head-to-head's pretty dismal, as we all know:  19-8 to Djoko.  hmm  Andy hasn't beaten him since that memorable straight-sets win at Wimbledon the year before last, but took him to four sets in the AO final earlier this year & all the way in the semi-final at Roland-Garros.

Murray is apparently 47-0 this year when winning the first set. In order to beat Nole, he needs to take that first set. Beat him once, and who knows?

Don't forget too that the run of 8 victories by Djokovic are all since the back surgery. The H2H before that was 11-8, not nearly so embarrassing.

Andy really needs to beat him tomorrow, though, and stop the streak.

Reckon he will do it tonight.

Good luck Andy is fantastic to have him back in the saddle again. Does reaching number 2 mean he will be seeded 2 and in opposite half from Djokovic in U.S. Open?

I think it is based on the rankings after next week's tournament in Cincinnati which means there is still a lot to play for.  The points difference between Andy and Fed is very small.  But if he can hold on to the Nº2 spot, then you are correct.

WR 2 on Monday week would have Andy seeded 2 for the US Open. But that has still to be settled, with the Cincinnati Masters still to come next week.

If Andy loses tonight in the Montreal final, Roger will have to go one stage further than Andy at Cincinnati to take back the WR 2 place.

Andy would be 195 points ahead after Montreal, drop his lowest counter of 180 to be replaced by the compulsory Cincinnati points, so still be a net 15 points ahead, forcing Fed to go that round further. Could come down to a Cincinnati SF meeting between the two.

If Andy takes the Montreal title ( great in itself for various reasons ) that net 15 points advantage for Cincinnati becomes 415. Much nicer.

Thanks Indiana for such a superb analysis. He is playing well tonight which augurs well. Love it when he opens up and lays into his forehand. Would still like to see him doing more backhands down the line but hopefully that will return!

What a potentially disastrous intervention by the umpire Murphy at 4-4. Why the hell should he state categorically to Andy the ball was out when it turned out to be in? Idiot. However Andy remained cool and hits his way to first set lead. Cmon Andy!

Here's hoping the "one who wins the first set wins the match" holds good, then. Fingers and everything else crossed.

I somehow had it in mind that the final was 8 pm local rather than 8 pm BST, and then saw it in progress on bet365 when I was checking Naomi.

Yes, may the set one winner prevail !

Well just a daft eight point start he gave away at the start of the second set. Still in this!
