RE: Week 32 - ATP 1000 - Coupe Rogers, Montréal, Canada (hard)

Kohlschreiber in Munich was in yellow too, I have just remembered.

Andy defeated Jo-Willy 6-4 6-4, I took the tablet up to bed, but only saw bits as I kept dozing off - no fault of the tennis! So really all I did was flatten my battery. Ah well, I'll watch it on catch-up today - at least I can pause that when life interferes.

QF:  (2) Andy Murray WR 3 defeated (10) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA) WR 24 by 4 & 4

That win means that Andy becomes the second player after Djoko to qualify for this year's WTFsmile

******

SF:  (4) Kei Nishikori (JPN) WR 4 (= CH) vs (2) Andy Murray WR 3

The head-to-head is 4-1 in Andy's favour, he having beaten the Japanese three times on hard courts (Shanghai by 3 & 0 in 2011, the Oz Open by 3, 3 & 1 in 2012 & Brisbane in 2013, by 6-4 2-0 retired)) & once on clay (the semi-final of this year's Madrid Masters, by 3 & 4) .  Nishikori's only win, by 4 & 4, in fact, came in last year's WTF, when Andy was practically "running on empty", as the Yanks say.

QF: (2) Andy Murray WR 3 beat (10) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA) WR 24 (CH 5 05/12) 6-4 6-4

SF: (2) Andy Murray WR 3 vs (4) Kei Nishikori (JPN) WR 4 (at CH )

H2H : 4-1 to Andy. Andy won the last one 6-3 6-4 at this year's Madrid Masters SF ( clay ). Kei's one win was the previous meeting at last year's WTF group stage ( indoor hard ) 6-4 6-4

Andy will overtake Roger to be WR 2 on Monday if he wins this SF. In resting and running, Roger is currently on 8065 points, Andy on 8020.

The ATP has confirmed that Andy is the second player to confirm his place for the O2 ( I believe some other guy did a while ago ). Bit less complicated this year, Andy

By the way, Djokovic saved 2 MPs vs Gulbis and Chardy 7 MPs vs Isner ! Nishikori & Andy through rather more straightforwardly.

Schedule ( in theory ) :
Not before 3 pm, 8 pm BST : Djokovic vs Chardy
Not before 6 pm, 11 pm BST : Doubles
Not before 8pm, 1 am BST : Nishikori vs Murray

PS : I could have bet that while I was composing that someone else ( and SC would have been fairly short odds   ) would have got in there. We don't appear to disagree on anything !

Thank you to you both. Congratulations to Mr Murray on qualifying so early for the O2. As you say, Indy, it's a little bit less stressful than last year!

The semis are a bit lopsided, aren't they? #3 v #4 and #1 v #49, and the more difficult line-up with less recovery time both before and after.

Djokovic has his doubles SF ( it's scheduled on another court "after rest", the one between the two singles SFs is the doubles SF involving the Bryan brothers ). Not sure that will over stress him, but made it inevitable that his singles SF would be first.

Plus with Nishikori being late and Andy very late yesterday, if not long matches, they're probably quite happy to be playing later. But let it be at least close to 8 pm, local.

Andy broken back straight away, but some fantastic hitting enables Andy to break again (from 40-15 down) so Andy will serve for the first set.

Well that was all very stress free for those watching. Andy wins 6-3 6-0. Nishikori only managed to hold serve once in seven service games.

Fantastic way to leapfrog the Fed into Nº2 spot in the world.

Nishikori looked to be struggling physically in that second set but a crushing win for Murray nonetheless, looked pretty supreme in that second set after a bit of a struggle in the first (getting broken twice). Returning looked on song throughout.
