RE: Week 18 - ATP Masters 1000 (Mutua Madrileņa Open) - Madrid - red clay

Things going very smoothly - at the moment:  Andy leads by 6-2 3-0*.  Here's hoping for no wobbles this evening...

Easy peasy (apart from a bit of bother in the fifth game of the second set...!

L16:  (2) Andy Murray WR 3 defeated (WC) Marcel Granollers (ESP) WR 62 by 2 & 0 smile

An hour & five minutes:  Granollers should be fresh for his doubles match! wink

Raonic (5) or Leonardo Mayer in the quarters.

No Murraycoaster tonight - nicely stress-free. I suspect the QF may not be as easy.

Great timing for a win like that. Andy is playing some good clay court tennis right now, so Raonic is a pretty unfortunate QF opponent because a lot of it will rest on Raonic's serve.

Quarter Finals :

(16) Isner vs (6) Berdych
(3) Nadal vs (10) Dimitrov
(7) Ferrer vs (4) Nishikori
(5) Raonic or Mayer vs (2) Murray

Raonic has taken the first set 6-4

Very open tournament this. I honestly couldn't call it from any of the four in the bottom half to make the final. Nadal should make it in the top half, but he's been far from his best this season.

QF:  (5) Milos Raonic WR 6 (= CH) vs (2) Andy Murray WR 3

The head-to-head is 2-3 to Raonic.  The only time they have met on clay was in the Barcelona QF in 2012, when Raonic won by 6-4 7-6(3).  Andy won their most recent encounter, at the WTF last year.

Bjorkman is putting Murray into a very good place - inside his head. Playing as he did, winning two matches inside one day, one played until three in the morning and taking it (particularly the ridiculous scheduling) all in his stride, demonstrates a mettle and steadiness that he has conspicuously lacked in the recent past.

QF:  (2) Andy Murray WR 3 defeated (5) Milos Raonic WR 6 by 4 & 5

*****

SF:  (4) Kei Nishikori (JPN) WR 5 (CH = 4 in February this year) vs (2) Andy Murray WR 3

The head-to-head is 3-1 in Andy's favour, the one in the Jap's favour being in the round robin round at the WTF last year.  They have never played one another on clay.

Good stuff so far; here's hoping Andy's winning streak continues :)

Yes, be great to see our clay court king now in a clay masters final.

And as long as all his matches haven't taken a real toll on Andy, I think I'd quite like to see a Rafa vs Andy final.

(6) Berdych vs (3) Nadal - NB 3 pm ( 2 pm BST )
(4) Nishikori vs (2) Murray - NB 8 pm ( 7 pm BST )

In between, the women's final Kvitova vs Kuznetsova at 5.30 pm ( 4.30 pm BST )

With I presume a trophy presentation and switch to evening crowd after the women's final, I would not be amazed by a less than prompt start for Andy.

Really good run from Andy on the dirt.

Certainly Bjorkman is doing good stuff, and maybe the marital bliss helps too!

Hope he can beat Nishikori and I'd give him a good chance against the current Rafa.
