H2H 11-11 but 0-3 in WTFs (0-2 since it has been in London)

What about 2008 - he beat Fed after beating Roddick and Simon (when he didnt need to - wondered if it was payback the following year when Fed contrived to give Del Potro just the right number of games to keep Andy out of the semis)

I had to dash off as soon as the match was over to do things - but my heart rate is still not back to normal. I hope Andy serves better on Thursday, as I don't think he can beat Fed unless he does.

Yes, of course. I was technically right (it was then the Tennis Masters Cup not the WTFs) but practically wrong LOL

A bit more detail on qualification.

If Andy beats Fed in 2, he goes through unless Nishikori beats Raonic in 2 as well, in which case it would come down to games won % - Andy is playing the evening match, so at least he will know by then whether that is an issue.

If Andy beats Fed in 3, he goes through if Raonic beats Nishikori but goes out if Nishikori beats Raonic

The only way Andy can go through if he loses is if he takes a set off Fed and Raonic beats Nishikori straight sets.

It's looking pretty unlikely for me. But all the best to Andy, a good win today.

Roanic v Nishikori on 1st so Andy will know what he has to do by the time he starts. Hoping for Roanic in 2 as that means Andy may only have to win a certain amount of games. It is possible he could losse in straight sets and STILL go through in that situation.

Edit

Scratch everything I said above. I typed it out 30 mins ago and then my internet went down. Now it is back up and I can post, Steven has already given a far more detailed explanation, although it does conflict with mine over the Raonic in 2 permutations. Given my Maths, I know who I would trust cry

If Andy loses to Fed in straight sets and Raonic beats Nishikori in straight sets, we will have Fed clearly through on 3 wins and wouldn't it then come down to games won % since the other 3 would all be :

Matches 1-2 and sets 2-4 with amongst the three each one H-H up and one H-H down each in straight sets.

Or is their some horrid clause somewhere ??

That is actually how I had read it - although I cheated and took it from Ben Rothenburg's tweet.

So far, Games won/lost are as follows:

Andy: 21/20
Kei N: 17/20
Milos: 15/26

First of all Raonic has to win in 2 close sets. Then we can get the calculators out.

Yes, my mess-up - Andy can go through if he loses in 2 sets and Raonic wins in 2, dependent on the games won %s.

Never try to do these things in a hurry *blush*

Still, another possible Andy qualification scenario, I'm happy

I thought that a real gutsy win from Andy despite the huge pressure on himself from that woeful 2nd serve of his. (The Sky Chatterboxes have it all down to his back but the stats over time don't show much change imo). Raonic, wayward and wasteful at crucial times, chipped in his bit to help Andy along but overall a great win.

This site has a handy 'will-Andy-qualify' table:

I'm glad Steven was wrong for once, because I was having some serious head scratching as I was reading down this page. The fact that Raonic only won 1 game against Fed in the1st set of his match is really hurting him and helping Andy.

I'm not fancying Cilic's chances at the moment of getting to the SF.

Matches : 0-2
Sets : 0-4
Games : 6-24
