If you exclude 97's from the rankings (it's only a month away) - it looks a lot healthier for the boys
New Current 13 25 CLARKE, Jay 38 63 MOORE, Ewan 85 131 CANTER, Alexis 87 134 STORRIE, Ryan James 136 205 GRAY, Alastair 144 219 HAMMOND, Luke 145 220 BASS, Finn 150 228 MOLLOY, Jack 155 234 DRAPER, Ben 166 250 BROOM, Charles 174 262 PERRIN, Lawrence 218 317 STEWART, Max 330 450 HERSEY, Jake 333 453 MCHUGH, Aidan 336 457 DAVIS, James 364 491 STORY, Matthew 371 499 NEWMAN, Louis 409 551 JONES, Adam 411 553 DAVIES, Will 413 555 PURSER, Luke 442 589 LUMSDEN, Ewen 462 610 GSCHWENDTNER, Jeremy 477 630 TYLER, Joe 488 649 PARKER, Alexander Carlos
and for the girls: (there are a lot less 97's on the junior circuit)
It is interesting to see that the cyclical thing may be happening again with the boys outperforming the girls, especially with 3 or 4 of the girls likely to focus on senior tennis
Paulsi thank you very much for going to the effort to put this together, given the present criticism of the current crop of juniors in the press which must be pretty disheartening for those actually playing and coaching at the coal face this truer reflection of the present situation is very helpful.
I think comparing the boys with girls at any given point is very difficult as the present crop of 13 year old girls could easily be equated with the present crop of 17 year old boys when it comes to transitioning to senior tennis in 4-5 years time.
While interesting to see, and thanks for doing that, paulisi, hopefully not but all things being equal that could look a bit of a highpoint for the guys come later in the year, at the top end anyway. Also, of course, they may increasingly concentrate on seniors next year.
I just say that, because the first 6 are 1998 born ( Luke admittedly a December '98 ) and so entering their final junior years and one would generally expect the younger boys to be more progressing up the rankings.
Finn Bass ( October, so quite recently just turned 16 ) and Jack Molloy ( July ) head the 1999 born in the rankings and be very interesting to see how they do, maybe particularly Finn who I believe was out for a while.
So while such as Jay, Ewan, Alexis and Ryan have progressed well, Jay particularly, and I somehow particularly think there is quite a bit more to come from Ryan, I don't personally think the boys are outperforming the girls or close to it.
The 1998s look a better group than the couple of years that followed the Kyle / Luke / Evan / Cameron 1995 year. But the girls have been and continue to produce at least a couple of really good looking prospects each year ( to now Ali Collins and Francesca Jones in the 2000 borns ).
Plus the boys have had very little impact at all in seniors so far and that is relative to other countries and taking account of later development.
No, the girls still clearly have it for me in actual potential, and the boys still a relative concern if some better signs, whatever might initially be read into these early 2016 rankings. I tend to look at the junior boys and girls and think who do I really see as future senior top 500ers and beyond.
Come on the boys and girls !

On slightly strange anecdote that I was discussing with Steven on Twitter is that the year end ITF rankings compared to the current rankings on the ITF differ significantly for the boys. The girls look correct.
The year end junior rankings are not the same thing as current rankings at the end of the year!!
To be included in them, a player has to have played a certain number of Grade A events and a set number of events outside,of their own country. Will need to look up the rules to be more specific.

Ah, thanks, TO! I thought some of the GB boys' rankings looked a bit higher than I expected when I saw the year-end list but assumed I just hadn't been paying close enough attention recently until Paulisi tweeted me about it. I do vaguely remember this rule from previous years now you mention it and it would explain why the year-end rankings pdfs have columns showing the number of Grade A events played and the number of 'foreign' events played!

If you win a grade A event, it counts double (in terms of number of tournaments played). It also counts as a foreign tournament (even if held in your own country). So effectively, if a player wins a grand slam or other grade A event, they may be included in the year end rankings even if at first sight it seems that they haven't met the criteria in terms of number of tournaments or location of tournaments.
