Weeks 12 & 13 - ATP 1000 - Miami Open - Miami, FL, USA (hard)

Nicolás Jarry has made the quarter finals, putting out 7th seed Casper Ruud.

Jack Draper's two match points in round three look pretty impressive in retrospect.

Still a match on that day that Jack could and probably should have won. So it remains rather frustrating. Jack has set standards that mean I look for progress rather than take anything particular from other matches on other days.

Thanx Indiana.

That's gutting news, as he was playing better. I was hoping that he'd go out in at least a partial bang, not a whimper.

I just hope that he's fit enough to play in the last GSs, and maybe dubs in the Olympics.

When I heard the news I said this must mean the end of Andy's playing career.

Why would you fight back from an injury like that at that age just to add a couple more matches to a career that you were looking forward to winding down anyway?

But you never know with Mr Murray I suppose.

Stu Fraser's reading of Andy's situation - & arguably a clearer explanation of the injury.

Agreed. Seyboth Wild could have beaten Jarry and Ruud didn't play well. That said, the fact is that Jack was playing well enough to have won despite feeling unwell so I don't think too much needs to be read into the result.

Also Fabian Marozsan's is an eye-catching result, having beaten Jarry this year and Rune and De Minaur here and reaching the quarter finals with a ranking of 57. Plays Zverev next.

Amazing semi-final win from Jannik Sinner 6-1, 6-2 over Daniil Medvedev.

Expected better from Medvedev who took the first two sets from Sinner in the Australian Open final playing what Nick Kyrgios (on commentary) called 'super aggressive' tennis.

Here DM looked like he lacked belief from the start, maybe just psyched out by what happened in Australia.

After Grigor Dimitrov's shock win over Alcaraz I'm almost intrigued enough to stay up and watch the other semi, although it doesn't start til 11.

We'll see.

Ive not been able to follow IW or Miami really , occasionally checking results. Id love Dimitrov to win the semi, of course most of us would.

somewhere on this board towards the end of last year, I wrote that I though Dimi would get top 10 this season and also reach a slam semi. Looks like top 10 is likely - if he wins this semi, he has got to live 8 - and Id like to think the semis at Wimbledon or US are in his grasp.

No obvious winner had emerged when I  left off watching at 4-all but Dimitrov broke serve not long after I went to bed.

It's tempting to see this trophy as having Dimi's name on it. His free-swinging style, taking the ball so early and with such accuracy throughout the tournament, he's been a revelation.

Sinner remains a heavy betting favourite yet I'm fascinated by this final, far more than I would have been if Zverev were involved.

I think what Dimi has done is marvellous but hes clearly got a great coaching set up with Dani Vallverdu (much underestimated when he was with Andy, IMO) and Jamie Delgado through 2023 and onwards. Jamie also proven to be a really good coach.

As a team they seem to be good and they all seem really nice people, no surprise probably that both worked with Andy , of course, another nice guy who knows how to spot a coach.

I wondered if Dimi and Andy happen to be friends? It would seem to make sense if they are?

I can't find anything online about them being friendly - but I did discover that Andy leads their head to head 8-5.

As to this final Dimi started well, two holds to love and an unconverted break point in game four.

Then the break went to Sinner and Dimi was never looking like recovering it.

Dimi tried to change things, he started coming to the net and won a few points like that, D was playing well he remained ambitious, his head didn't go down, but Sinner was just too good, moving around the court so well. It's the best I've seen JS play.

6-3, 6-1.

Didnt see it, and disappointed for Dimi. But Sinner is clearly the best player out there right now. I hope he plays Queens as well as Wimbledon !

Seems like at least at one time they were good buddies

Both are also entered into Queens, fitness allowing.
