Week 7 - ITF W50 Roehampton - Indoor Hard

As long as Hep plays she will get her 3rd counter for a WTA ranking regardless of the result.

To me this seems a loophole because surely you could get a wta ranking based on three MD WC and three losses? I know it's only in certain level tournaments, but even on one occasion doesn't seem fair compared to those who've earnt all three counters by winning matches.

Yes, I prefer the ATP system where the only players that can get points without winning a match are direct entries ( so not WCs ) to Slams or ATP Masters events. You get a ranking after just one score but at least it's a score as a result of winning a match or two.

Whereas at different levels players can receive points for losing MD R1 matches and even QR1 matches, including WCs. They even give loads of points for losing matches in the WTA finals.

Yes, a complete scam, really, and a definite unfair advantage to (a) countries which host a lot of higher level events and (b) players within those countries who are federation favourites

Not that I begrudge Hep a wildcard at all, she did well in the Aussie Open (juniors), and has just won the J200 in Germany. But the system ain't right....

Yes, I don't begrudge her a WC. It does rely on whoever decides on WC being sensible, honest etc. and as you say places with lots of tournaments can give local WC, and usually to their favourites. Clearly Hep has potential and has won matches at various levels including juniors to justify WC, but still...

Its equally unfair that Hep is without a ranking when than are 161 ranked women with fewer ranking points than the 8 she has and she has a win against a top 500 player as 1 of her counters. So while I generally agree that wild cards should need to win to get ranking points on this occasion I don't mind too much.

Lily's opponent is a 17yo with a JCH=8, so it could be harder than it looks.

 Thanks Peter.

Bartunkova was runner-up at Junior Wimbledon last year, beating Hep, Mimi and Ranah in succesive matches. Ranah was the only girl to take a set off her before the final.

She was also runner-up in Sunderland, beating Emily Appleton in the first round. Lily will do well to win this one.

Bartunkova  as a wild card had a win on the  main WTA tour at Cluj in October 2023 over   subsequent  Aussie Open semi finalist Dayana Yastremska.

Is anyone watching Hannah? It says there is no valid video source when I try to load the stream on the ITF site. Has anyone managed to get it working please?

No, I couldn't get it to work yesterday for any match either

I'm watching on Bet365 (which does go to full size screen for this match)

Brilliant - thanks - I'd forgotten about that - duh....

It's better quality than Bet365

And Hannah takes the first set, 6-3

Ah yes thanks.  I found it just in time to watch Hannah take the last two points of the set.
