Boys & Girls: Australian Open, hard (Weeks 3/4)

Looks like weve 7 out of 8 into round 2 with just Oli (who might have been expected to win) losing in the opener.

Great set of results on the girls side today. Really pleased for Hep.

Amazing win by Hep, in two sets, to take out the 11th seed !

It's true that Charo Banuls is probably slightly more of a clay courter but all the same, that's a huge result, and at a key event

Well done, Hep

Congrats to all the other wins too, nice clutch one for Ben (and shame for Bonding)

The AO junior draw is showing the wrong result - Hep and partner won their doubles 10-7, not lost it

Skimming through the matches this morning I noted that Isabelle did very well to regroup after an epic tenth game, with around 15 deuces and 6 setpoints for Isabelle (only one which she was up in the point though). Hep's opponent wasn't very good, but as previously noted by Simon is a clay court specialist. It wasn't a good day for the Spanish girls as the seeded Kaitlin Quevedo also lost to the dangerous American qualifier Aspen Schuman (beat Mimi at the US Open and came close to beating Hannah at Traralgon). Isabelle doesn't have to play a seed next as the young Japanese girl Wakana Sonobe was ousted by Aussie Maya Joint. However that wasn't a surprise, as the Aussie is WTA565 and only lost 6-4 in the third to Yastremska in final qualifying for the women's draw here.

Oli's opponent took over from midway through the first set, hitting some neat winners. Oli saved from 15-40 in game 7 with big serves, but couldn't save the third breakpoint at 4-4 and the rest seemed comfortable for the German. There was good crowd support for Ben's match. He held a 5 deuce game at 5-5 in the decider to set himself up to break his opponent next game to 30.

Yes a shock defeat for Kiugman's potential quarterfinal opponent against YET another Czech player Vendula Valdmannova. But still another tough opponent remaining in that quarter, Ena Koike.

I think Lacy's next opponent, Maya Joint, is a possible dark horse for the title. She reached the final qualifying round for the main draw proper.

Honestly, using this message board on my phone makes me look illiterate half the time. It hates hyphens, apostrophes and ellipses. A struggle!

But yeah, Hannahs backhand and serve look pretty big already. Movement is decent. Forehand bit more hit and miss but still crazy good for 14.
