Week 45 – BJK Cup Playoffs – GB v Sweden – Copper Box, London – Indoor Hard

Is it the 2 or 1 strings who play first tomorrow? Either way, got to go with best singles players which would be Harriet with Katie

Oh thats harsh! Jodie is featured in the wta players to break into top 100 - in all due respect, Harriet and Heather aren't there. I agree with Anne K I would have gone for Katie and Jodie.

Harriet struggled in Glasgow ITF60. I thought she would walk away with the title but Mimi (junior) put up a better show. I don't think Harriet is back to her best. Another 12 months may be different.

The BBC website is showing Katie v. Persson first and Jodie's match 2nd. The 2nd match tomorrow is going to be a weight on somebodies shoulders whoever plays.

It doesn't make any difference what the ranking is

Persson is ranked 372 and yet she beat top-100 Jodie

So why should Jodie get the call over Harriet, say, just because she is slightly higher ranked?

(Which is not to say that Jodie shouldn't be chosen, just that you don't get chosen simply because you're 30 places higher if you lose to someone 300 places lower)

No one will be more upset at her performance than Jodie. Her grandma was on Facebook last night saying she hoped everything would go well. Sometimes it doesn't. A young woman out there has to come back and fight for a victory tomorrow. Thats tough. I wished her well and her family.

I wish her well too. I wish her well if she plays. And I wish her well if she doesn't play.

If we want experience , Heather might actually be an option to get us through the second singles.

although we may not want Heather to play back to back, or Harriet for that matter. Maia- get warmed up!

Not sure where to put this but Italy will play Canada in the BJK Cup final. It looks like Leylah Fernandez has starred for Canada beating Vondrousova in the singles and then combining with  Dabrowski to win the doubles against the champion pair of Krejcikova and Siniakova.

Fernandez has had a stormer of a week - win this and , from a Canadian perspective, it will surpass her USO final! She has a weak second string singles partner and has had to carry her singles in each match.

As an aside, Persson has played a few Brits this year. Eden took 11 games off her earlier in spring; Mika took 8 games the other week in Glasgow , and Imogen Haddad 6 games there also.

Jodie took less games off her.

She is clearly beatable.

Good comments that make sense. Those feelings are all understandable but (a) it makes Annie's failure as a captain during the match even worse, and (b) Jodie couldn't have had a softer debut opportunity outside of a dead rubber (which may not have helped).

I'm sure Jodie did feel the pressure but it's hardly the first time this has happened to her. As mentioned previously she somehow snatched defeat from the jaws of victory against Korpatsch last month and loses her composure far too easily.

Well ladies and gentleman we all seen again why tennis is such a brutal sport.
Jodie eventually looking like she is injury free, breaking into the top 100, having her best year to date and then yesterday happens.
I fell sorry for her but yesterdays experience should serve her well going forward but if it happens again tomorrow then she might not relish the thought of Billie Jean cup in the future.
What really did concern me was Annie Ks lack of captaincy.
We all know that Jodie can implode at any time but there were times when Annie should have been relaxing Jodie, showing her a friendly smile and telling her its just another tennis match, filling her with confidence and installing Jodie with he fight and confidence to turn the match around against a player ranked nearly 300 places lower.
All I seen Annie do is look very worried and concerned about Jodies performance as if she was letting the team down which would have made Jodie worse.
I would think Harriett or Heather would deal with Persson tomorrow but Jodie should be in this team for many years to come so she has the chance to turn this into a great experience tomorrow.

Come on GB

She was clearly beatable as back in W25 Glasgow Feb. 2022 Jodie beat her 7-6 6-4. Kajsa  has been been busy playing in this country recently in both Shrewsbury and Glasgow so was getting plenty of indoor practice here.

 Good post.

I think you're spot on about Anne. She always reminds me of Jeremy Bates (OK, I won't get started on that one ) but it's the same demeanor. The pained face. The ultra serious, tense, uptight look.

Now, Jodie said that each point felt like a million points, she was clearly feeling the weight and 'horror' of what was going on. And she obviously doesn't deal with that very well.

You're probably right, Deucebag, and she needed someone to smile, to tease her about the bad shot, to make her laugh and relax

Equally, she might have needed someone to actually shout at her and snap her to. Tough love, sort of thing.

She might have needed a very methodical, back to basics approach

That's the role of the captain - to know what is needed to get the best out of the player

And that's what was lacking
