Given a reprieve though for good behavior. Rublev has won.

L16:  Jack Draper WR 123 vs (8) Andrey Rublev WR 8 (CH = 5 in September 2021)

Jack even got a mention on the Beeb's late night news 10-15 minutes ago.

Will be a good match on Monday. Labour Day holiday as well, Monday, so be interesting to see if they make that a prime match. No American men left top half, so all will be playing Sunday.

Draper very impressive most of the time, a strong performance, no hint of injury hang ups. Evo valiant to the end, a very enjoyable match. Norrie's form is a worry. Arnaldi did play a blinder though.

Yes but in his post-match interview, Jack says he's got a new little shoulder tear as of last week (which they think/hope is not connected to the serious one he had earlier in the year). And he's still wearing strapping of some sort on his stomach muscles. He talked a lot about the state of his body..... it's not plain sailing yet, and I wouldn't count on Davis Cup ::((

That's worrying.  I hope he doesn't do anything silly & agree to play in the Davis Cup, especially in its current format.  It's not worth it.  It's more important that he get himself fully fit.

I agree. Katie Boulter would have been a different player if she hadn't half-killed herself in that BJ Cup match years ago (in a match where she almost certainly would have retired if it hadn't been a team match). Took a couple of years to fully get over it, it seemed. The Davis Cup comes every year, I agree it's not worth it, there will be plenty of years for Jack to play. If he wants.

And there's the Olympics next year. I would have thought Jack would be a big contender for that and would love to go.

Yes I kind of thought that after my waffle. Sorry, Jon.

 Good waffle though ! Ha.

im really keen to see where Leon goes with DC in 2 weeks. Surely he will add Jack now to his squad - unless he has already - and Jack plus Dan for singles? If he has just one doubles specialist in Neal, maybe we will see Jack plus Dan and Neal with Dan or Andy in doubles - not sure id favour Cam right now for singles play!?

All these conversations at The Waffle House wink

I was going to post something similar last night but got too tired after a very long day. Totally agree. Its great to be committed to your country but your priority should be your own health, especially for players like Jack and Katie who are prone to injury.

Djoko survived a big 5 set scare last night.

All the talk here is re the us guys in the last 16 and could this be the first us slam win since A-Rod. Dont see it myself although the 4 left in the bottom half are playing decent and entertaining tennis. Certainly expect a semifinalist though

Hoping Djoko gets knocked out - not keen on an another Alcaraz vs  Djoko final. Maybe Paul will be a surprise outsider especially if the crowd gets behind him??

For Paul read Ben Shelton, who's just beaten him in four sets (6-4 6-3 4-6 6-4)!

Very happy. Never been a Tommy Paul fan either. That said, he's done miles better than I ever thought he would - I'd got him down as top-50 if he were VERY lucky. Wrong But still find his play rather laborious, a bit sulky, rather 'taught' - whereas Ben is like a little puppy dog, all boisterous and having fun

Looks like it will be Shelton versus Tiafoe and Fritz versus Djoko in the last 8 - the 3 Americans are all through.

Got me wondering who the last black slam finalist was in the mens game- since Open tennis began , I can think of Arthur Ashe, Yannick Noah and Mal Washington who have won or made a slam final. Washington was back in 96 or so , I think, at Wimbledon , so almost 30 years ago. Anyone since?

With Djoko in the way, hard to say Shelton or Tiafoe will make it through to the final, but a great chance for both of them.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga says hello from the AO in 2008 (l to Djokovic in the final)

Thats right- I was thinking French and getting stuck at Monfils and forgot Jo Willy. Still, a poor return and something tennis should have done better at, I think.

We have to wait a little longer for Jack's match to start: Peyton Stearns just lost the second set.

Damn it Jack is broken in game 4. Rublev is looking the safer bet in the early going, his touch is good, but it's a 5 set match and things will fluctuate J needs to keep his chin up.
