Girls: 2023 Wimbledon (Week 28)

Clervie was far too powerful and clever for Isabelle. Lots will struggle against her.

Any thoughts on why Isa did so well in the senior grass court events but has struggled in the two junior competitions?

Malak El Allami (MAR) v Hannah Klugman Court 8 match 4
(WC) Isabelle Lacy v (2) Clervie Ngounoue (USA) Court 4 match 4
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Clervie Ngounoue has an 80% win rate on grass so far. Isabelle Lacy also has an 80% win rate on grass though! I think there is danger here.
Nikola Bartunkova lost to Sonay Kartel in 3 sets in April in the women's and beat Hannah K on hard court. Unless Hep can pull something out of the bag, of course.
Charo Esquiva Banuls, only 15, beat Isabelle Lacy but it was on clay - as CD says, she's a clay player, so hopefully Ranah will come through.
Kaitlin Quevedo, as CD says, beat Mimi previously on clay. She also beat Hannah K on clay too (it always surprises me when anyone beats Hannah!)
Rebecca Munk Mortensen, as CD says, lost to our Gabia last week. However, she's beaten Charo, Kaitlin and Wakana Sonobe (on clay) previously although lost to Ranah (hard court).
Lucciana Perez Alarcon - I don't know much about her other than, as she says, they don't have grass in Peru and that she's on the Grand Slam Development Programme. I think she might be a dark horse here at Wimbledon.
Malak El Allami, not much to say on this player. Don't really know of her.

Should be interesting.

Thank you so much TW18 - have we ever had so many junior girls through to round 2 in a Slam before?

Yes, though you have to go a long way back - 7 in 2000 (including Elena Baltacha and Anne Keothavong)

As Mervatron2 pointed out Isabelle reached the quarter-finals at Roehampton, where she was the last Brit standing in the girls singles

Great win for Mika, she's got quite a beautiful backhand! She was in control of most points from what I saw, several times she set the point up beautifully only to miss the next shot.

What does a r3 do for her ranking?

Move her up to around 160-170

Clervie may be second seed but she hasn't been having it all her own way recently. And a lot of her wins have been tight matches. Not to mention Mika had match points against her last week.

So I think Isa has every chance.

Ranah is a bit unpredictable but Charo is very much a clay courter and is a decent draw

I don't think Hep has much chance

Mimi is playing the girl who beat her at Roland Garros - but it was three sets, and on clay (obviously) so let's see what grass gives

Ella is playing the girl that Gabia P beat easily last week which, without being rude to Gabia, is not a great result....

Mika's opponent is class, but again very much a clay player

As is Hannah's opponent

So, not saying they'll all win () but I think those are all playable matches (apart from maybe Hep's)

Well, we had seven girls in action. And I'd written off Hep, thanks to her opponent.

So four out of six was pretty good

Some excellent matches there today - and two that were a bit disappointing - Ella for not acutally doing anything with the ball, and Isa for being outclassed when I honestly don't think she need have been, or not quite so clearly (although maybe I'm wrong)

But will take today, no problem

Bravo to the winners, and always remembering their ages:

1 x 2005

1 x 2007

1 x 2008

1 x 2009

She did, but lost quite tamely to Kaike. Maybe I had unrealistic expectations after her wins over Brengle and Golubic who I assumed were tougher opponents.

I think they were both injured. Or one was, and one was as comfortable playing on grass as she would be playing on ice

Perhaps we had so many Brits in the 2nd round because there were more WCs given this time?  Just a thought.

No. WCs are always allocated by the host nation. There are extra players this year as they are there by right.

My theory is she struggles at the moment with people who really belt the ball. She doesn't have so much time for her own shots and it takes away a bit from her own game, and she tries to outhit them back but it doesn't work.

That was my impression from seeing how differently she played at Surbiton compared to Wimbledon qualifiers against Ruse, who was also hitting very powerfully. I thought Clervie might also have a weight of shot that might disconcert her. She started okay yesterday, having break points and then 40-15 on her own serve but when she was broken, she seemed to struggle to get back in the match. I'm sure this is all great learning.
