Girls: 2023 U16/U18 Junior National Championships, NTC, acrylic (Weeks 14/15)

The girls final was tight at the start (Mika had at least one breakpoint at 4-4) but Hannah is now on a roll with 5 games in a row: 6-4 3-0*

Hannah wrapped up that title very easily

6-0 in the second set

But Mika played very well in the first set and can take positives from that

I'm guessing Hannah thought it might be a push over of a game and to me seemed to only find herself midway through the first set. Once Mika is losing, she seems to crumble and Hannah knows that, with Hannah slowing the ball down to get back on track. Good play from Hannah, especially in the 2nd half. Not as exciting as the boys' match.

I love Mikas groundstroke game but her serve needs a load of work in my opinion, especially in the legs

She's flat footed, I believe.  Is that a hinderance to her play?

Do you mean medically flat footed (whatever that means?)

Or just 'normal' flat footed? As in not very dynamic, not very 'bouncy'?

Her legs are practically non-existent in her serve, I agree - she gets no power from them, it's all arm

Considering her coach is apparently full of himself youd assume shed have perfect technique:)

Medically flat footed.

We start again tomorrow with qualifying for the under 18 Nationals. When I last checked all the top 19 ITF ranked girls were still on the entry list (Maria Ustic being the highest missing), which means eight of them are in qualifying, with clashes such as Ruby Cooling v Flora Johnson in QR1

Full qualifying draw here

I was impressed watching Hannah live for the first time, very dynamic strokes.

Unfortunately, Ranah has withdrawn

QR1 is completed

And the main draw is out too

Strange not to see Lois Newberry - maybe she didn't qualify as of right and there were no wildcard slots still available? Seems a little strange, given how well she did in U16, and how many other U16s are playing here

But, overall, no major upsets in QR1

the results I noted were:

Leticia Romanova (2008) beat Brooke Black (2007)

Dani P won (Dani actually won the consolation draw last week)

Ruby Cooling beat Flora Johnson

Lois withdrew from qualifying earlier in the week. All the girls wild cards were taken as soon as the acceptance lists were published a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks, Lambda - I wonder why she withdrew? She looked fine on Friday - and presumably withdrew before Friday if you say earlier in the week.....

Just noticed she's playing an ITF in Belgium this week.
