Lots and lots of withdrawals at Felixstowe - I'm guessing that anyone who felt a slight twinge after their first match then withdrew, to try and protect themselves and get back in shape for Roehampton and Junior Wimbly

By lots you mean five or six today. The men's draw is looking rather weak with only 2 seeds left, but the top 4 in the women's draw are still there, although Hep is one of the withdrawals.

This is a grade 1 with enhanced prize money. If you can't complete the week, or in some cases part of the week, because you have somewhere else to be then don't enter. It's unprofessional, it's disrespectful to your opponent and it's disrespectful to the player who you denied an opportunity to get in.

And to the tournament organisers / host club as well who will have put a lot into the event organisation.

We wouldn't be in as bad a situation if some of our 'older' players entered these events, especially on the women's side. I still don't understand with £1,000 on offer to the winner why they don't, Alice Gillan excepted whose playing for £1,000 in the Progress Tour this week. It's the same with the Progress Tour in Sutton next week with £2,000 and a GB ITF WC for the winners and £1,000 to the RU. The entries are woeful. Surely some lower ranked players would welcome £2,000 and a ITF WC?

To be fair, there isn't a lot of organisation required at the actual event. I haven't been down there for a BT event for three or four years but basically the club is open as normal, some of the courts are used for the event and there's a single LTA organiser on site - I doubt whether they would have had umpires (they didn't at the Premier event there in 2016). But I agree with Lambda about the players. The qualies draws weren't full though but there were still 48 women and 65 men there (plus a fair number of parents/coaches as there were a lot of juniors) Not forgetting the QWC into a M25 for the winner of the mens.

THere's a British Tour event at Paddington this week. I went to it last year and it's quite a nice setting, although you don't feel it's at all an event to promote British tennis, more a box ticking exercise for the club (you can't even get a cup of coffee there - the bar doesn't open till 5 pm, I was told - yeah, fine, and I know staff is not cheap but maybe for these four days you might think to have someone? There's a big mark up on coffee and drinks - and there are lots of players' family etc milling around (if not members of the public)

Anyway, in the men Fabio Nestola is down as actually being disqualified, not walkover, which is quite something - no idea what was going on

There's also a suprise entrant of a guy with a good ITF ranking, an Aussie named Lawrence Sciglitano. He's top seed.

There's also a Polish guy (Pawel Safuryn) who is a structural engineer for Rolls Royce (whom I've seen play before) and has put out the second seed.

Also, Oscar Wai, Will Mclennaghan (whom I like), Dan Bird, Stef Cooper (always good for a bit of atmosphere), Will Nolan (very decent junior, about JWR 60, and at US college now) and Raffaello Papajcik, who Bob met, I think, and got on well with (I saw Rafa play last year here too - all the best ot him)

In the women, the top seed is young Alessia Popescu who plays for Romania but must live in the UK, I assume, as she's always on the circuit here.

Kate Mansfield (USA) is second seed.

There's also Megan Davies (very pleased to see she's back on court and she beat Erin Pearce easily), Serena Manca, Isabella Walker, Tia Bonita Jakupovic-Kljako (who put out Sofia Johnson), Louie Mclelland, and Min Mahmut, who is a rather tiny girl, but has lots of skills (talented musician and dancer too) and a great dad.
