Apparently Tomljanovic has been carrying a knee injury for a couple of weeks so was always in doubt.

I would imagine they had their airfare covered. Jan is something like Alt 16 for AO qualifying so an opportunity to get airfare paid makes it worth going over to Australia and putting himself in the mix for a spot if the opportunity presents. I would imagine plenty of players on the Alt list won't bother to make the journey.

ETA It's a mixed tournament, of course there should be mixed doubles in it

Having a scour of the rulebook last night, I think it's actually the PR that counts for ranking points, which must make sense as it's the top 2 by ranking/PR that must play and why should a player be disadvantaged if they beat an opponent who they're playing because of a PR but who's actual ranking is much lower. As Hives has a PR of 142, Katie would get 20 points. Who knows. You've got more chance of getting a PhD in Quantum physics than understanding the rules to this thing. confuse

Tomljanovic is Australia's only direct entry into the womens singles at the 2023 Australian Open.

Totally agree re the mixed doubles , of course it should be - I was

thinking a better format would be two singles and three doubles ie one match

of each of our sports five Formats. But it is what it is.

But Australia is the one Open that pays for all the players airfares anyway, isn't it? Even the quali players?

The tie might be won, but every rubber counts in the unlikely event that Spain beat GB AND Aud beat Spain leaving all three teams on one win and the complicated count-back comes into play.

But the option to change the doubles team certainly is an option.
