Weeks 26 and 27 - The Championships, Wimbledon (grass) - women's singles

Goodness. Heather doing well until she has to close the set and it's absolute carnage. Horror serving.

5-4*

Such, such strong deja vu here...Heather goes from 5-2* to *5-5. I can't remember a match where she's not got tight in a set-or-match-winning position.

Tiebreak went exactly as you'd expect... terribly.

Awful tennis for 1-4*

Great tennis to *6-5, Korpatsch finds a winner after a nervy nothing rally from both. Great serve gives her a second set point. Terrible backhand dragged wide, terrible backhand long, terrible backhand miles long.

6-7(7) 0-0*

Her forehand is basically non existent. Pretty unwatchable and can't see her coming back tonight unfortunately.

*1-2

Wastes two break points with another ballooned backhand and a return off a 70mph second serve that barely reaches the net.

Tennis Abstract forecasts round one wins for Sonay, Harriet, Katie B and Heather.

None of them are forecast to win a second match. Katie B has a 0.3% chance of winning the title; Emma has a 0.1% chance, despite only being roughly a 1/3rd chance of winning her opener.

So, 4 wins in total are forecast in round one in terms of likely winners. But, in actual fact, adding the percentage together gives an overall forecast of 3.6 wins in total in round one.

When I checked the bookies' odds on Sunday afternoon, they were implying the following R1 win probabilities:

81% Harriet - 73% on TA
81% KatieB - 73% on TA
68% Heather -62% on TA
64% Sonay - 53% on TA
40% Emma - 35% on TA
32% Jodie - 23% on TA
32% KatieS - 20% on TA
24% Lily - 23% on TA

So, four favourites to win and an expected value of 4.2.

Here are the TA forecasts against the bookies odds - seems to be quite a consistent difference between TA and the bookies, again, as per mens, some sort of hometown element that gets built into the bookies odds?

Emma surprises TA and the bookies; looks like Heather will do the same but the wrong way round

I love Heather but goodness these days it is painful to watch her. Does she even believe in herself. At one point she shouted out questioning what she was doing. You have to wonder how this match will finish.

Without pointing any fingers. Why do some players wear MASSIVE eye lashers when playing? especially when they are wearing a visor, indoors at night? I was sat next to 'a player' at Wimbledon qualies a few years ago and thought ....wow they were HUGE!  when you see it. ypu can't unsee it

Heather fought HARD in fairness to her!

She really did. A few moments it looked like she might let it slip but she dug in. For every one glorious shot there's 3 terrible ones, but somehow she broke and survived to serve it out.

Usually I think you want to keep momentum but I think this break probably suits Heather more. A hard night to sleep for Tamara (who has been much better than she was against Katie).

Yes she did. She was working very hard for every point towards the end, and I thought she done enough to deserve the set.

Great to see Emma win comfortably given the injury doubts beforehand, a shame she doesn't get to play Lily in R2.
