Alfie Hewett won his last 8 match comfortably, but Gordon Reid was upset and lost to the young Japanese, Oda. Reid was 4th seed.

So just Andy Lapthorne and ALfie left in singles now

As CD points out elsewhere, Alfie and Andy both crashed out today breadsticks and bagels respectively . Just doubles left now.

This week is the big Super Series event , The French Riviera Open, which is played at the Mouratagolu Academy near Nice.

It is a big field - the Super Series events in some ways are tougher than the 4 Slams, they have 32 draw singles versus 8 or 12 in Slams - and on Clay, still. The grass season starts next week across Queens, Birmingham and Eastbourne before Wimbledon for the wheelchair players.

In terms of Brits - we have Gordon Reid in mens, Lucy Shuker and Cornelia Oosthuizen in womens, and Andy Lapthorne in quads. No Alfie Hewett this week and as a result Gordon is seeded 3. Presumably Alfie is getting ready to play Queens next week.

The prizemoney for Wimbledon is impressive. Given these are 8 player events in singles, there is £160k per wheelchair event with £51k for the winner. If someone like Alfie could win singles and doubles, he could win £62k in total.

www.wimbledon.com/pdf/The_Championships_2022_Prize_Money.pdf

That is quite tidy.

I would love to know how much the top players can earn a season, there is an elite group, the top 10, and the Slams are pretty much a closed shop to the top 10 or fewer players. I imagine someone like Alfie could win a couple of hundred K a year in prizemoney, plus endorsements. A nice living and good luck to them!

Recent results on clay and of course at RG mean that Alfie has lost his number one singles spot this week to Japanese Kunieda. Alfie is now down to number 2 . In doubles, Alfie swaps places with partner Gordon Reid and goes to number one.

In the British Grass Court events this week, Alfie lost his semi and so no British singles finalist in the mens at Queens.

In Birmingham, the quads had a 3 man field of all Brits in a round Robin ,
Andy Lapthorne plays James Shaw to decide the title.

Women play at Eastbourne next week.

All the British women lost in the first round in Eastbourne.

Not been a good event for Brits, sadly.
