US College Signings and General College Chat 2022/23

Thanks to EP and Tennpar for all the updates you have done and do - hopefully, get us through the end of the NCAA's at end of May and then your jobs are done (is that the end of the college season by the way!!).

Good luck to you both and your families/"kids" and hope they are successful in whatever their journey holds next for them!

Are there any 'newer' readers of this thread out there (e.g. US tennis college kids' parents) who would like to report on 'over the pond' activities as the older kids (EP's and mine) graduate & move on?

Our children probably know each other then TP smile   Definitely the  end of an era!! Hopefully as you say, there will be some newer parents or players to pick up the reins!!

Links to D1 Mens team Sweet Sixteen: I dont think there will be any major upsets, Im going UK (no Brits on the roster) over Stanford, TCU over Mississippi  and Tennessee may just have the edge over S Carolina.

Yes end of season, many players have already finished lectures and graduated. There is a new UTR tournament ( I originally posted on UTR thread) overlaps somewhat with D1  Championships, maybe of interest to those who got knocked out earlier in the competition

Announcing the - Universal Tennis National Intercollegiate Tennis Championships!

Universal Tennis is announcing the first-ever Universal Tennis National Intercollegiate Tennis Championships (NIT Championships) for college teams to participate in a postseason competition from May 17-20 in Atlanta, Ga.

The womens tournament will run May 17-20, and the mens from May 18-20. Amazon Prime members will be able to watch the live stream at no additional cost.

NCAA Championship Womens Doubles Pair

Not Brits, but the Delaware womens doubles pair who had a fantastic run last year under Brit coach and former Uni of Iowa student -athlete Elise van Heuvelen Tredwell become the first Uni of Delaware team to qualify for the NCAA tournament. Elise has moved on, however the pair are being coached by another Brit, Lucy Harper a former Uni of Wisconsin Milwaukee student athlete.

Uni Delaware seems to be a place where a lot of Brit players and coaches are heading.

Allegedly many coaches like the Brits, because the are in the main very bright academically, great work ethic, have a different cultural vibe which can enrich the team (many Americans have never been outside the US) and bring a unique perspective to the team both off and on court. Also most have English as a first language- imagine being a student athlete (D1 tennis roster is like having a part time job), studying for a really academic subject like Engineering and doing it in your second or even third language!!

Get to know Lucy Harper

My knowledge of US tennis is dire but I'm always interested in the posts here

And I like to add bits I've read, never really knowing quite how they slot into the whole picture, but just hoping they are relevant and add something of interest

Tennis Scotland runs an excellent twitter feed and tennis news service (LTA England could really learn a thing or two).

So here's their rundown from 9th May:

"Three Scots reach NCAA Sweet 16

Stateside, three out of the four Scots competing in the NCAA Team Championship progressed through the round of 16.

Connor Thomson and University of South Carolina dropped only one rubber as they beat South Carolina State and Florida State University 4-0 and 4-1 respectively.

Thomson picked up a doubles win in the opening round before remaining unbeaten in singles. In the second round, he clinched the tie in singles 6-7 6-3 6-2.

Ewen Lumsden and Mississippi State also progressed as he picked up a singles win against Alabama State, before clinching a vital doubles point against Middle Tennessee State to help the Bulldogs to a nailbiting 4-2 win.

Jacob Fearnley won four out of four matches over the weekend as TCU took on University of Texas Arlington and Texas A&M, including a convincing 6-2 6-1 singles win over Raphael Perot.

Jamie Connel remained unfinished (match was not completed since the tie had been decided) in both of his singles matches as the Florida State Seminoles moved past Baylor University before falling to Connor Thomson and South Carolina in the round of 32.

The round of 16 will see Fearnleys TCU face off against Lumsdens Mississippi State as well as Thomsons South Carolina play coach James McKies University of Tennessee."

Will this signal the end of the Memphis Britfest?

After nearly two decades as the University of Memphis men's tennis head coach, Paul Goebel has decided it's time to hang up his racquet, officially announcing his retirement Wednesday.
Goebel has been a part of the Memphis program for the last 24 years, joining the Tigers as an assistant coach in 1999 before being promoted to head coach five years later in 2004.

In 2018, he helped guide Ryan Penniston to the Round of 16 in the NCAA singles championship and then coached Penniston and Andrew Watson to the national semifinals in doubles. Both are the furthest any Tiger has advanced in the NCAA Tournament.

Goebel has coached eight players who have gone on to professional careers, most notably Joe Salisbury (2010-14), a former world No. 1 in doubles and five-time Grand Slam champion. In 2022, Salisbury became the third British world No. 1 in either singles or doubles. He has won 12 doubles titles on the ATP Tour, played for Great Britain in the Davis Cup, and competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics alongside Andy Murray.

Another former Tiger, Irelands David O'Hare, reached his highest world doubles ranking of 117 and is now the coach of Salisbury and partner Rajeev Ram.

Other news, Elon junior Dan Martin was selected as the Most Outstanding Player at the 2023 CAA Mens Tennis Championship in a vote by the leagues coaches. Dan spent 2 years at Minnesota, where he saw very little action. Dan transferred to Elon when Minnesota made a shock decision to close mens tennis! Elon definitely seems a better fit.

I know some forum members dont like Dan, from what I can remember from seeing him play as a junior he was a tall, very quiet boy with an unorthodox style (some might call it ugly) but seemed effective enough. Allegedly his parents had an Excel macro which worked out the likelihood of Dan progressing through a tournament and the cost to benefit ratio, with likely ranking points per Ł for every tournament. Dans matches were scheduled accordingly. I bet there are a few tennis parents whod like to get their hands on the Excel formula wink

Thanks for these updates - Ive trawled through some of the links but wondered , is there one site or page which has the draw/bracket and results in one easy to read place, like wed see a draw for Wimbledon or Davis Cup? Many of these links have onward links to individual sites for colleges or live viewing that is now dead after the match? Thanks !

Thanks EP and Danny T

Some great snippets (so pleased that O'Hare is doing well)

And go Millie and Angie ! (I like the singles event - even the dubs too if pushed, especially when it impacts on Wimbly wildcard etc like it has done - so go Nell)
