US College Signings 2022/23


Will Jansen has decommitted from Yale, joining North Carolina in Spring 2023. Billy Blaydes also decommitted from Tennessee and has signed to Auburn for Spring 2023

Allegedly the transfer portal is buzzing, so will be interesting to see who else jumps ship or transfers for a Corona grad year #hopontheportal

After 1 season at Furman, Jamie Connel (UTR 12.61) is transferring and has verbally committed to Florida State Uni @FSU_MTennis for fall of 2022. The 2022 @SoConSports Freshman of the Year played at the #2 singles and #1 doubles spots this season with records of 27-6 in singles/23-5 in doubles.

Barney Smith is on the FSU roster as a Junior, he joined Texas A&M 2017 but was red shirted 2021-22 due to injury.

After 4 seasons at Iowa and 1 season at San Diego State, Joe Tyler (UTR 12.57) is transferring & has signed with @HOCROSAINTS for fall of 2022 as a graduate transfer. The Brit played at the #1 spots this year with records of 17-8 singles/16-12 in doubles. ATP singles rank #1362.

Joe must have been red shirted at some point as went to Iowa fall 2017 - Spring 2021 and SDS as a grad transfer 2021-22

Singles, Toby Samuel tops the Brits at #37

In Doubles, it is Luc Fomba and Jacob Fearnley (TCU) earning the top spot after the junior and senior duo earned ITA All-American honors in Doubles after a dominant season in 2021-22. Finishing as the No. 2 ranked team in the final Division I Mens ITA Collegiate Tennis National Rankings last season, the duo finished 19-5 from the Horned Frogs No. 1 position last season, including a 9-1 mark against nationally ranked opponents.

After college.

As seen throughout the 2022 season, college tennis has proven once again to be a pathway to the professional tour as 48 players with college ties are set to compete in either the Singles Qualifying or Main Draws at the US Open. Three Mens players, No. 7 Cameron  Norrie (TCU), No. 24 Francisco Cerundolo (South Carolina), and No. 30 Maxime Cressy (UCLA) are seeded, in addition to No. 19 Danielle Collins (Florida) in Womens Singles.

After a week and a half of play from the 2022 US Open, nine former collegiate alum are still competing across the Mens, Womens, and Mixed Doubles draws as play has reached the Semifinal round in all three draws.

Beginning with the Mens Doubles Draw, a former collegiate athlete is guaranteed to lift the title for the fifth time in the past six years as Marcelo Arevalo (Tulsa), Jean Julien Rojer (UCLA), Rajeev Ram (Illinois), Joe Salisbury (Memphis), Robert Farah (USC), and Neal Skupski (LSU) are all into the Semifinals.

Where are they now? College tennis men who signed 2018

   As they are student athletes, I have included academic as well as tennis honours, several our D1 students are taking a 5th year (Covid year) to play college tennis. I couldn't track who is trying to go Pro after graduating and I dont follow D2 or JC, so if anyone does, please feel free to update :0)

There are a couple of players who were missed from the 2018 signings thread and I have added them in, apologies if I've missed anyone.

Rhodi Atkinson - Lenoir-Rhyne (Div 2) (See notes on Lewis Scott)

Finn Bass (Jan 2018) Baylor. Spent a year pre Baylor trying to go pro and had to sit out the first college season to satisfy amateur requirements. Has not seen much singles action in 4 years at Baylor, however paired up with fellow Brit Charlie Broom (Grad transfer to Baylor) to play doubles. Finn is on the roster as a 5th year Senior

Matt Beecher- Tyler JC then transferred to Campbell, left after Junior year without graduating. Currently playing some ITFs, dad Collin a former LTA coach.

Matt Caroll - ASA Miami (NJCAA), transferred to Uni Florida 2019 majoring in Sports Management. Second team all-SUN 2022.

Oscar Cutting Memphis. Redshirted junior. Ranked dubs pair with David Stevenson. With the departure of James Storey to Sth Carolina last year, Oscar saw action at #1-#3 singles 2021/22. With a strong history of Brit recruitment, famous Alumni is Joe Salisbury.

Joel Hancox - Judson (NAIA)

Sebastian Harris - Gardner Webb, Bachelor Business Admin, Graduated 2022. Millen Hurrion was on the roster in 2018 but transferred to Uni Kentucky.

Liam Hignett - Tennessee Tech. Liam didnt start at Tennessee as his father was tragically killed in an RTA that year. Liam is currently coaching, playing ITFs and the pro tour. Allegedly going to Exeter Uni this autumn.

Emile Hudd - Oklahoma State. Highest Singles Ranking: No. 40 (3/23/22). Highest Doubles Ranking: No. 6 with Shunsuke Mitsui (12/8/21)/. Grad transfer to U. Tennessee

Toby Huffer - ASA Miami (NJCAA) (Jan 18).

George Hutchins - Texas-Rio Grande. 2021-22 did not compete, so still a Junior 2021/22 Not on the roster 2022/23.

Charlie James - St Johns NY. Freshman year, named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. Saw action at #6 and #4 singles, mainly featured at #2 doubles 2021/22. Not on the roster 2022/23.

Alexander Joachim IUPUI. Has seen all of his action at #1 singles, from Freshman year onwards. Named the Horizon League Freshman of the Year and named All-Horizon First Team. Senior year named to the All-Horizon League First Team Junior through Senior year, named ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Scholar-Athlete. Will spend his graduate year at IUPUI

Jack Joel - Catawba College (Div 2)

Josh Lazenby - Lenoir-Rhyne (Div 2)

Ewan Lumsden Tennessee. Ranked as high as No. 119 in singles as a sophomore (2020). Emile Hudd joined as a Grad Transfer.

Tad Maclean Auburn. 2021 ranked No. 56 nationally in singles at the end of the fall season and named All-American in doubles. In 2022 received the Cliff Hare Award which honours a Senior student-athlete for academic and athletic success as well as leadership, integrity and courage. Not on the roster 2022/23.

Oliver Okonkwo Iowa. Mens tennis was disbanded end 2021, was on the transfer portal to go to Drake, however Ollie stayed at Iowa and allegedly had knee surgery. Reached a career high of #2 singles with fellow Brit Will Davies. 2022/23 Grad transfer to Uni Illinois.

Jake Penny Lipscombe; Played mainly #6 singles and #2 doubles. Will stay at Lipscombe as a Graduate Student

Edward Pudney Montana. Played #1 dubs and singles Senior year. Older brother Thomas plays tennis at Colorado-Pueblo D2.

Andrew Rozanov Georgetown, Graduated 2022. LinkedIn has him as working in the US.

Josh Rose - ASA-Miami (NJCAA). Left before the end 1srt semester, played on the Pro tour for a while, now a tennis coach.

Lewis Scott - Lenoir-Rhyne (Div 2) (and where Alex Croker is mens' Graduate Assistant Coach and Brigit Folland is the women' Graduate Assistant Coach)

Dan Siddall Tulsa, Exercise and Sports Science played primarily #6 On the roster as a Junior 2020-22 (red shirted 2020??) and a 5th year Senior for 22/23.

David Stephenson - Memphis (Jan 18) Redshirted Freshman & Junior. Ranked dubs pair with Oscar Cutting (see above). Will stay for 5th year at Memphis.

Max Stewart - Oklahoma (Jan 18). Career hight ITF #68. 2021 Academic All-Big 12 First Team2020 ITA Scholar-Athlete, Academic All-Big 12 First Team, 2019 ITA Scholar-Athlete, Academic All-Big 12 First Team. Not on the roster 2022/23.

Krishan Taneja - Lake Superior State (Div 2)

Josh Taylor Lamar. A 2019 Second-Team All-Southland Conference selection. A 2020 First-Team Academic All-Southland Conference selection

Tom Thelwall-Jones Tulsa studying Finance. Saw action at #4-#6 singles and #1-#3 doubles. Not on the roster 2022/23.

Pierce Widdecombe Dartmouth. Saw some action #3 doubles alongside 6 different team mates. Coach Chris Drake who recruited Brits including Paul Midgely and Charlie Broom left to 2020 LinkedIN says recent graduate with an Economics degree seeking employment. Allegedly parents separated and American mother moved back to the US 2019 to be near Pierce, so he should have no issue staying in the US to work.

James Wilkinson Delaware, Economics. Has been team Captain and seen all his action at #1 singles and doubles, from Freshman year onwards. 2020/21 All-CAA Second Team, 2021/22 All-CAA First Team Singles and doubles, Delawares CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Will remain for a 5th year at Delaware as a Graduate student.

Josh Wilson Liberty. In 2021/22 Honoured as ASUN Mens Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year for a second straight season, Named to ASUN All-Conference first team, selected to 2022 ASUN All-Tournament team, voted to VaSID All-State singles second team for the second time in his career. On the roster 2022/23 as a Senior. Fellow Brit Deji Thomas -Smith also on the roster.
