Week 26 - Wimbledon - London (grass) - women's main draw

The Beeb still dissecting what happened with Emma - all speculation at the moment. Things happen, Jack Draper collapsed at the US open. Sounds as if Emma has sensible parents and a good support network, so hopefully she will make a full recovery and will continue to enjoy her tennis.

Re other grand slam WCs, it is crazy how these British commentators think Emma has entitled herself to a GS WC on the back of one great run...

For a year or two, didn't we have some reciprocal arrangement with the Australian Open or US Open? This was a bit before my tennis time, but I'm pretty sure Baltacha got a WC to the Australian Open as like a 19/20yo?

The QF line-up :

(1) Barty vs Tomljanovic
(19) Muchova vs (25) Kerber
(8) Ka Pliskova vs Golubic
(21) Jabeur vs (2) Sabalenka

So, just as the French Open QF had 8 totally different players from the Australian Open, the Wimbledon QF has 8 totally different players from the French Open QF. We also have just 2 repeats from the AO to Wimbledon ( Barty and Muchova ) so the 24 QF slots in the 3 Slams this year have been filled by 22 different players!!

Now we had a story to follow at Wimbledon wirh Emna to the L16 and there are sone great individual stories in these Slam quarter finalists ( and further ) but the awful lack of consistency and genetal narrative wirhin women's tennis continues ( Osaka, Halep and Serena's problems haven't helped but still ).

Great depth and competiveness I have heard before. I'll stick again to a bit of a mess and needing much more consistent leading players, there to be shot at and help provide a more ongoing narrative.

And yes, the men's is rather too much the other way than is ideal for many. The narrative is certainly there but the endings tend to be very familliar.

Correct. Bally got a wild card for the 2003 Australian Open. That was following on reaching the 3rd round of Wimbledon in 2002. That proved to be a 1 off arrangement.

Whether it was related to covid was speculation, I think. It looked like heat exhaustion watching it live, but of course, covid could have had an impact on that.

Naa, no sympathy whatsover from here for reasons I and others have given before. It was disgraceful scheduling. and as CD pointed out unprecedented for a L16 women's natch in many years at least. wimdledont had so much right earlier, other than urging Emna to retire and become an ex-player - please don't! Re the chasing of viewing figures disruptung fairness to such an extent ( irrespective of how long the men's match then went ), simply "WTF?! !?!" as wimdledont said. In the end, at least Alja didn't have to play until near 11 pm.

If there is no play on outside courts today due to the rain perhaps the schedulers could put one or two uncompleted matches on the main courts.

There are still Second Round Mixed Doubles to be completed

Pliskova and Sabalenka is an interesting one, and two of the very best players not to have won a Slam. Kerber obviously known to people as a former champ and Barty the #1. Not a bad line-up, two very different matches on offer I think.

youd hope - mens QF featuring Mektic and Pavic is scheduled but youd think it made more sense to get through some of the unfinished matches if they can

Agree. If Barty gets through it's a very strong lineup - number 1 & 2 seeds, former champ, and a player long considered by many as the best without a slam. Also, whoever wins their semi's, fabulous game style match-ups in the final.

No chance - they are playing the doubes now, but if it doesn't go on too long they'll probably put something else on the court. I see that some of the later matches on today's schedule have been cancelled, but they must be still hoping to get some play in as there are still at least two matches still scheduled on every court (that includes the unfinished matches)
