Week 26 - Wimbledon - London (grass) - women's main draw

The lower half of the draw always plays the Monday, so Katie B, Katie S, Harriet, Jodie and Heather should play on the Monday and Jo Ko, Sam, Emma and Fran on the Tuesday.

I'd expect Harriet to get a show court against Mertens and maybe Katie S against Keys too on the Monday.

I feel Katie B, Heather and Emma have great chances to progress, and Jo Ko, Jodie and Katie S aren't without hope either - all in all I think the draw has been pretty kind to the Brits and atlhough it looks very tough for Fran, Harriet and Sam, I'm hopeful that we may get 4 or maybe 5 Brits into round 2.

With the form Katie S has shown in qualifying, I'm not sure Madison Keys is in for an easy ride.

On paper Jo Ko's draw looks lousy as she would have to meet Ash Barty early on, but Ash has been carrying injuries and may well not be on top form - my Aussie friends are very despondent about Ash's form and fitness at the moment.

Anyway nine Brits to watch (a rarity in recent years) and the superb win for Katie S has meant my glass is three quarters or more full today.

hi - i thought the way it worked was that the side of the draw with the champion in it played on the Tuesday, what used to be ladies day but isnt really anymore. That could be either half but the opposite half would play the monday.

Without Halep playing, it may well be they choose the top seed to open Tuesday and therefore the top half would play Tuesday. Or they may choose someone else like Serena and have her open Tuesday.

ditto, mens champion always starts Monday and thus his half of the draw play Monday/Wednesday etc

I guess we will see but it isnt aligned to top half playing Monday...hope that helps!!

Yes, tradition is that the men's champion plays first on Centre on Monday with the rest of his side of the draw also playing on the Monday.

And similar with the women, except Tuesday rather than Monday. So yes it's now just a question of what they do without Halep.

With Ash Barty and Serena both in the top half of the draw that looks the likely half to play on Tuesday with, in this instance, the women's bottom half playing on Monday.

When Marion Bartoli did not defend the title in 2014, Sabine Lisicki as the runner up in 2013 opened the proceedings on the first Tuesday in 2014.  On that basis Serena will be opening proceedings on the Tuesday.  The same applied when Steffi Graf did not defend in 1997 and Arantxa Sanchez did the honours..

Thanks Rosamund, that is good to know!

Certainly an interesting, though pretty challenging, Brit-centric part of the draw, with 3 of our 9 players being in this16th:

(13) Mertens vs (WC) Dart
Zhu Lin vs Barthel
(WC) Burrage vs Davis
(Q) Swan vs (23) Keys

Our best R1 chances probably lie elsewhere but you never know.

The other half of this 8th of the draw has (29) Kudermetova and (4) Kenin as the seeds.

How much fun would a Jodie-Katie S 2nd round be

Katie S seemed as happy as if she'd won the final, not just made it into the First Round.

I was watching the LS while Katie S was playing, and Bouncy was pointing out how long the Nicolescu vs Ahn match took for a competitive 1st set but there was an mto, and Ahn lost the 2nd set 6-1. So she  may be carrying an injury, and Heather may  not have too hard a match.

Wimbledon have gone with Barty (as the no.1 woman presumably) to open, so that's the bottom half women and top half men playing on Monday.

Edited to add: I prefer it this way than what was discussed above and how they did it previously

Barty opening up makes a change. It just seems tradition for the previous years runner up to open up in the absence of thr previous years winner. Most recently Angie Kerber opened up  2017 when Serena was absent. This tradition also applied in other years not mentioned 1981, 1975 , 1963,   and 1959. The big exception was 1970 when Ann Jones did not defend and Winnie Shaw did the honours.

Im not sure what it means for when the Brits will play but having Barty open Tuesday ensures top seeds play on separate days for
Men and women.

Most of the British men are Monday schedule, I hope the womens draw doesnt overload all our Brits into Monday, Wednesday and leave Tuesday relatively bare?

5 British women will be due to play on Monday, Wednesday etc and 4 on Tuesday, Thursday etc, split as per in Andy's post.

As you say, our men are more unevenly split wirh 5 due on Monday etc and just Cam due on Tuesday etc.

So in all 10 on Monday etc, 5 on Tuesday etc.

Interesting re the examples of the previous year's RU having previously opened Centre Court proceedings on the Tuesday in the absence of the reigning champion. Though in the last relevant year, 2017, Angie Kerber was both the 2016 RU and the WR 1.
