The player was Dally Randriantefy. She seemed to have a career in 2 spells. She played in 6 Grand Slam tournaments in 1995 and 1996. Another 1st round loser was Dalma Galfi whose failure to make it in the seniors has sometimes been discussed.She was the World number 1 junior in 2015 and Katie Swan beat her in the semi finals of the 2015 AO juniors.

I notice that the 2nd seed Oceane Dodin has lost in the first round qualifying.I seem to remember her beating Jo in St.Petersburg last year when Jo was having her knee troubles.

What is Tsvetana Pironkova doing in qualifying? She was a quarter finalist in the 2020 US Open and a 3rd round at the 2020 French Open which is better recent form than several direct entries,

Was it really that long ago - I remember seeing her play and I would have guessed at 10 years ago. She was a good powerful player, quick around the court. I had totally forgotten about her, when I mentioned about Andrianjaftrimo. You normally have a clue a person is Madagascan by the huge length of the names. It always makes me laugh that the capital Antanananavairo is shortened to 'Tana' by everyone who lives there, and I'll bet it is the same with names. Anyway she thrashed Naiktha today, by the looks of things. I don't like to be unkind to any British player, but she is definitely someone who looks to be playing at a lower level than her ranking suggests.

I do wonder whether Bains would have been better off coming back to the NTC after Lockdown 1 rather than staying in Australia

But doesn't she live in Australia? That's her home, her base, no? Why would she come to NTC?

Presumably there is only so much support the LTA can give her from 10,000 miles away.

She probably didn't want to be separated from her family given how difficult it is even for Australian citizens/residents to enter/leave the country but it left her rather isolated, not sure how much help Tennis Australia would have given to her.

She got to play UTR style tournaments over there which is all that the GB players were given in the UK.

There was no extra help for the non-elite group in the UK that I know of.

As she's not been granted that, she's not in that group, there's no other help that the LTA would have given her, even if she were here.

She is non-elite group in the UK yet she was a member of the 2020 Fed Cup team. Her selection was probably due to JoKo making herself unavailable.

IIRC the LTA sent players a Watt Bike to use at home at the start of lockdown when the NTC closed. I presume that wasn't possible for Bains.
