Thursday's Womens QF line-ups

Katy Dunne v Freya Davis
Emily Appleton v Holly Hutchinson
Emma Wilson v Nadia Rawson
Lauryn John-Baptiste v Katie Stresnakova

It's good to see Katy back and that she can at least play in the UK to ease herself back into match play, but it is a bit of a shame to see the way this event has gone the past few weeks. Obviously last years line ups were unattainable due to ITF and WTA events being almost back in full swing, and there would have been disappointment if many players prioritised this over ranking events, but while a notable and understandable drop in level at the start of this current edition, there were some pretty compelling fields in given weeks, and a good mix of ranked players and youngsters, but this definitely just seems a case of making up the numbers now, and just trying to complete it, at least to me anyway.

I've barely heard of half of the field this week. You've got Freya D making the QF after losing 1 and 1 yesterday, and she's subsequently a massive 25/1 at Bet365 to beat Katy in their QF, yes 25/1 in a QF. There's been so many hammerings, and when one player is winning only 1 game combined in their 2 matches, it kind of renders the new 3 player format (with 2 progressing) a bit useless. I did actually quite like the new format when it was first introduced, but it's reliant on better, or at least well matched, fields, and it hasn't worked this particular week.

I wonder if it'll be extended for a third year?

I did think that they had gone a bit too far with the 10 weeks and also the mens fields to 16. Meaning a diluted quality in players. However if it stays around for a few years it could bring better chance of bringing through more players as they will be able to see this as a good platform to play an earn money. Will be really interesting to see how it goes next year when hopefully the LTA manages to get some ITF tournaments back on the calendar. Playing the week after or two weeks before ITF's would be best. If the LTA manages to host the amount of tournaments it has hoped to then we could see a lot of British players hardly hit the overseas tournaments.

Although Katy did get a walkover yesterday, she did at least get some court practice with Abigail Johnson (commentator)

BT Sport to seem to have scaled back their coverage from the start of the year. Semis/Final no longer on the main channels and just one commentator per day. Rumours BT might soon sell up to DAZN.

Mens semis are tomorrow and we have Dan Cox, George Houghton, Vijay Prashanth and Scott Duncan in them. Not sure of who plays who!

I didn't even realise they stopped using YouTube for a while either and that you had to sign up to UKPL TV, but yeah, seems well down BT's pecking order, presumably due to poor numbers. I did think it was an amazing coup for UKPL when that was announced.

It'll be interesting to see what calibre of WC they can attract this year for the finals week.
