Matilda got completely beaten up in that set, she did what she could but her opponent was just hitting a far heavier ball, far stronger, and Matilda never was really in with a chance.
Well, the result was never in question - Matilda was outgunned in every department and made to look slow.
Lost the second set 2-6.
But she tried to use her weapons, and didn't give up, and put some decent tennis out there when she had the time, and can certainly see this a learning exercise from a girl who's only one year older than her.
But, overall, we lose our third player today, so we're down to zero.
Three countries with two players each in the boys' last 8 - Switzerland, France and Argentina each have two boys, with Austria and Holland having one apiece.
A good week for Argentina, that's for sure, and a very good showing by little Switzerland.
In the girls, there are again three countries with two, namely two France, Czech Rep and Russia. Also one player from Germany and one from Belarus.
Noting the lack of male players from Eastern Europe. And the complete lack of US or Asian representation (although many may not have flown over, with covid).
Also, noting that in the boys, with 16b seeds, only the 7th and 8th seeds are through - the other 6 players are all unseeded.
France will be slightly relieved to at least have four still going, but will want better, especially from Elsa J and Lillian M.
So British interest in doubles ends at the same stage as with the men. Meanwhile the three who beat our trio yesterday have all progressed to the semis
Boys Doubles QF
(8) Oliveira/Rodrigues (BRA) d. Fery/Gill 6-4 3-6 [10-3]
Yes, I saw that the two Swiss lads won again today. Not at all surprised about Stricker. Impressed by him. And Switzerland must be chuffed.
France now only has Elsa J left, in the girls. Not entirely surprising - always their best chance. But still not great. The two Czech girls play against each other for a place in the final.
I caught a fair bit of the girls singles QFs matches today. Elsa did well to come back as she was 2-4 and 1-3 down in both sets, but then strung a run of games together at the back end of both sets.
The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th seeds have all made it through, and the other, Charaeva, a bit older then rest, put out the top seed, and carved her way through the rest of the draw - she also reached a W25 final last month, beating Burel on the way. Charaeva actually met the young 15 year old #1 seed Kasintseva in the Melilla W15 event that Matilda recently won, and Charaeva was a reasonable betting favourite to beat the Andorran then, but lost in two tight sets, so on that basis, she would probably have been the pre tournament favourite to make the SF if they took bets on the junior events.
Charaeva vs P Kudermetova is first on at 10am UK, and Elsa vs Eala is 2nd on C14 (following Stricker). I'll try and catch a bit of both.
