QR1: Norbert Gombos (SVK) WR 119 defeated (q1/qWC) Kyle Edmund WR 42 by 6-4 6-7(6) 6-3
At least some signs of a fight....
Hmm, that's the least that can be asked even when his general game is so off. And I am afraid he still lost 6 of the last 8 games to the WR 119 after breaking at the start of the final set.
I'd like to see shoots of a turnaound but I sure don't see them there and I think we must now hope for much positive work in the close seasin.

Yes. I'm rather with you with Indy, in this thread.
Kyle doesn't need a 'wake up call', as such - he knows as well as anyone else how poor his recent results have been.
And I assume he's thinking of ways/plans, to address the problem.
But, really, he's not a kid any more; for someone who has had so much federation support, and top coaches, and has obvious weapons, it's rather bewildering to see him so lost.
I do wonder if the best thing for Kyle at the moment would be to call it a day for this year. Get some time away from the sport to get his head sorted, and then to get into a really good pre-season and hopefully hit the ground running with a fresh perspective for next year.
I have no idea having won this event last year why Kyle did not originally enter it this year?
Having said that they could have given last years champion a main draw wild card?
Maybe Kyle left it too late to choose to come here?
Whatever, the way things are, a chance to come through qualifying might have been good for him.
Yeah, that's what I think - I suspect that if he had a more successful Asian swing (or, well, year in general) he wouldn't have bothered and then the MDWC's were allocated already.
Besides which, as we all know Kyle can't beat his own shadow at the moment so he would've likely also lost in the first round / second if he got a BYE.
Kyle only took the wildcard late last week, too late for main draw. This appears to be an abject performance really, whatever issues of confidence he has, I do believe a person of 24 should be able to work through it and it disappointing he isnt. I hope he finds time to get it back together. Right now, i suspect leon will find Kyle unpickable for davis cup in a few weeks , and dan and cam will be selected with andy if his new baby allows.
