RE: Week 42 - ATP 250 - European Open - Antwerp, Belgium (hard)

At least Cam has the satisfaction of  making Hot Shot of the day - It was rather sensational at the time, and I did clap loud and long at the time (my neighbours may have noticed)

L28:  (PR) Andy Murray WR 243 defeated (WC) Kimmer Coppejans (BEL) WR 158 by 6-4 7-6(4)

Andy seemed to make rather heavy weather of that, but at least he got there in the end.

Indeed, not the return to Antwerp he probably hoped for. Day off now, cuevas and dellien play tomorrow. Improvement probably needed and am sure will happen.

Well,  as implied,  that wasn't a piece of p**s. Did I hear the commentator say that his opponent had never won a match on the main tour?

If he did, he was wrong. His ATP Main Tour record is W3-L8.  He has a CH just inside the top 100.

Edit

Is it possible he said "on a hard court".

Looks like Coppejans 3 previous victories have all been on clay.

Do folks recall when antwerp ran the ECC championships around 25 to 30 years ago. Peizemoney then was c $ 1 m , more than they pay now for this event.

I remember it used to be shown on bbc , same time the Grand Slam Cup got tv coverage, how times change

Ah, yes that would make more sense Bob, thankyou.

Andy's now up to LR 224. One more win won't do it but if he reaches the SF he will be comfortably within the top 200 again (in fact top 180), and he would likely pass Jay too into the GB #4 position.
I think a lot depends on Kim too. Her nearness to giving birth may easily be distracting him this week.

I'm still not sure that he actually does have any main tour wins. The ATP website does say he is 3-8, but it also says he is 2-1 this year, and I'm looking at his 2019 record and I don't see any main tour wins. He did win 2 DC cup matches which I assume the ATP site must be counting, so it's probably those 2 and one other back in the day somewhere (which I can't find) on his record, but no proper main tour wins (unless the mystery one was main tour). Could be wrong though.

Ha yes, you have it, Ace. The 2 wins this year are certainly the Davis Cup wins. And the 3rd win from 2015 also appears to be Davis Cup - a victory over Frank Dancevic (CAN) albeit a dead rubber so I'm rather surprised to see it counted. It is also a rather surprising lack of an ATP tour win for a player with a CH 97 who has spent a long time inside the top 200 but it seems to be the case.

I've got this feeling that Andy may have peaked in his comeback for this year, concern over pending birth or not. He has done really well but he may now be ready to move on, welcome his new family member, and build more for 2020.

Cuevas or Dellien in R2 is a decent looking draw though.
