I loved watching the Murray match yesterday. I've been missing those matches where I would be desperately trying to watch no matter what time it was. His form is so encouraging, this is a match he could have lost when fully fit, so I don't think he's far away now, with the way he is playing. I think nerves got the better of him when trying to serve it out, fair enough, just shows how important it means to him. I think he can get back into the top 10 now, which is unbelievable progress all things considered.
According to Stu Fraser in today's Times, the bust-up continued in the locker room afterwards:
The furious row between Andy Murray and Fabio Fognini at the Rolex Shanghai Masters continued in the locker room minutes after both players had left the court at the end of their tempestuous second-round encounter on Tuesday. Sources have told The Times that Murray, the three-times grand-slam champion from Great Britain, and Fognini, the world No 12 from Italy, were involved in another heated verbal exchange behind the scenes at the Qizhong Forest Tennis Centre. A small number of players, coaches and officials watched awkwardly as they aired their grievances with each other in a communal area.
The dispute started towards the end of their match, when Fognini yelled out in a blatant act of hindrance before a crucial point had concluded. Murray looked towards the other side of the net with confusion, initially unaware of where the noise had come from, and Fognini goaded him in return. They ended up arguing during a break in between games before Fognini went on to claim a narrow 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 7-6 (7-2) victory. It has now emerged that the pair were in no mood to back down when they arrived in the locker room afterwards and began remonstrating with one another again. Murray was noticeably angry when he arrived for his post-match press conference about 15 minutes later, not only unhappy with his opponent's behaviour, but also with his own failure to serve out the match on two occasions.
Murray arrived back in London yesterday having no doubt pondered, during a flight of more than 12 hours from the Far East, what he could have done differently to avoid a painful defeat. One particular source of disappointment for him will be that he rose to the bait of Fognini, who often uses confrontation as a motivational tactic. In the immediate aftermath of the match, it was understandably difficult for a riled Murray to take the positives from running Fognini close over three hours. Before departing from Shanghai, however, he did at least briefly acknowledge that improvements had been made during the Asian swing as he continued his comeback from a second hip operation.
"I guess one of the things that has allowed me to play at the top of the game for a long time is having high expectations of myself," Murray told The Times. "As much as I say I want to lower my expectations and not expect as much, I am unhappy that I lost that match. It's a match I should have won against a really good player. I have obviously made progress these last few weeks, but I am really disappointed."
Murray was also displeased with the umpiring of Fergus Murphy, who failed to penalise Fognini for hindrance and quickly lost control of proceedings. It has not gone unnoticed that the Irishman was also in the chair when Murray had a similar argument with Juan Martín del Potro at the Rome Masters in 2008. On both occasions, Murphy had told Murray to allow him to resolve the issue and then done little about it.
Stu goes on to recount the story behind the $120,000 fine Foggy picked up at the 2017 USO for assorted misdemeanours & quotes the absolutely vile & unacceptable insult he aimed at a female umpire.
Oh dear, but in a way great that Andy cared so much even if kinda wasted on the career loser that is Fognini. The competitive animal is growling again.
And in the grand scheme of things the loss is not such an issue as Andy and Stu make out. Andy can indeed now reflect on the real positives of the last few weeks. And with much more work over the next couple of months it is going to very interesting to see Andy 2020.
