Gabi! This is more like it 2 from 4, and that featured 2 with the longest odds, so hopefully at least one of Fran, Emma, Naiktha or Maia can come through later (maybe even more...).
Gabi plays 12th seed Bonaventure up next, who I remember beating Katie B earlier in the year, and also gave Kerber a good game in Mallorca last week, so that will be tougher and she won't be the pre match bookies favourite in that one.
Sam plays either 9th seed Osuigwe (17 y/o from the US) or Bucsa who we know from the ITF scene in recent weeks, Bucsa just sneaked into quallies as the 2nd last in after withdrawals, so is much lower ranked, but Osiugwe has not had much joy out of her UK trip so far, apart from that fortunate retirement 'win' over Katy in Manchester. Bucsa has just gone a break up in the decider there, *3-2.
Well done Gabi and Sam. After the guys leading the way recently, we've got a bit of a fight back from our women. Would indeed be fantastic for one of our remaining women to get through the first round of qualifying.
Emma had a whole host of BPs there to go a break up but failed to take them. 1/6 on BPs now after just 3 service games for Liang. Promising at least if she holds her own serve.
