Week 25 - ATP 500 - Fever-Tree Championships - The Queen's Club, London, Great Britain (grass)

James won at a canter.

Strong and solid, backhand firing, serve decent, and forehand surprisingly passable too.

Result was never in question.

Just in terms of the walking wounded, both Jay and Kyle were out on the practice courts, putting in full practices, looking absolutely fine (as far as you can tell and given it's only a practice).

A bit too cold and windy for comfort for the spectators but some very enjoyable tennis at Queens today.

Jack's match was interesting and entertaining.

Jack played a pretty dreadful first set. Bublik looked very uneasy on grass, unsure of his footing, it was windy, the grass was very lush and slippery, and Jack allowed him to get an early break, couldn't find a first serve, dumped countless second serve returns half way up the net and got eaten alive by Bublik's drop shots.

He got crosser and crosser (a little melodramatically) but was trying to shake himself into action and did so really well. He's rather like EVO in that way - he likes the crowd, and the noise, and needs to gee himself up.

And started to play better. The crowd were right behind him, Bublik got well annoyed, Jack played some very good tennis, including a couple of trick shot winners that were sublime - and left Bublik seriously unamused.

And he had a chance right at the start of the third but B served his way out of trouble. Was 0-4 down, got it right back, the tide was turning, and had a shot for 4-4 where he went for the winner, hit it sweetly, and only missed by an inch. It was the right choice, and well struck. Fractions...

At the end, Bublik hugged and applauded him (not sure he would have done if he'd lost), and they spoke for a couple of minutes - and Jack was smiles, and it was rather sweet.

Thanks for a flavour of the match CD. Sounds like Jack is getting comfortable at this level which given his lack of action through recent injury, is remarkable.

Hope you have now thawed out completely.

Random question.
I'm thinking of going to queen's tomorrow. Has anybody been before, how early do you to get there to get in?

Never been on the Sunday. On Saturday, gates open at 11. 800 people admitted.

At 10.30 there were about 500 people in line. Don't know how many others came after but I don't think it was a real issue (probably partly because it was so damn cold smile

I was running a bit late today probably joined the queue about 10:40 and got in. I heard them say something about 500 as I passed the women who was counting.

Only other think to note on Jacks game was Bubliks throwing in an under arm serve. Not sure if it was because of the wind or something he was trying. Thought that was key as Jack was struggling and this allowed jack into that point and he put a nice point together. Gave him some momentum. Good performance from Jack and on another day could have got the win. James put in a solid showing. A bit too easy!

I second the comments about the cold wind! Nevertheless an enjoyable day with the two Brits, an entertaining doubles and then Mahut's match. Not bad for the cost of a couple of coffees!

Glad you had fun.  Probably need a couple more coffees just to warm up again.

Yes, and jammed pack because of all the closures of other lines due to 'engineering works'. So very cosy indeed - and brilliant for getting warmed up smile

Well...Dan is still in Notts. I am concerned he will have little left in the tank depending on the results today.

Still the grass and the home crowd will certainly be in Dan's favour.

Tend to agree, hes had a couple of long matches so far and maybe two more today. Hopefully queens will give him a tuesday or even Wednesday slot.

I have to say I find the move to atp500 level for queens has been negative in that the old 56 draw event meant so much more tennis in the early days of the week. 32 leaves it a little sparse
