Week 33 - ITF ($100K) - Vancouver, Canada Hard

Katie wins the 2nd set 6-3 in a lot less time. 2 breaks to 1 this time.

6-3 3-6 (or whatever way you prefer)

Hev takes charge, and powers home. The irony of a Brit denying a Brit.
Good for Heather, and pleased for her. If she can find her mojo again, then British tennis is so much the richer for it.

But, our wait for a ninth member to our exclusive club goes on...

Since 2000:
Anne Keothavong: 19/05/2008
Melanie South: 02/02/2009
Elena Baltacha: 28/09/2009
Katie O'Brien: 28/09/2009
Heather Watson: 06/06/2011
Laura Robson: 25/06/2012
Johanna Konta: 23/06/2014
Naomi Broady: 08/02/2016

A lot of people saying Katie will make top 100 soon, and not to be all doom and gloom, but 11th August, 2014, this is exactly what the Australian forum was telling Olivia Rogowska... .... ... ... ... (CH 102, still to this date)

I know it goes against the majority but I wanted Katie to win, Hev's already had a fair bit of time in the top 100 cry

Hope Katie's time comes soon....

Such a shame it wasn't streamed, and at the event, for the Canadians now, too, as the matches featuring Marino & Bouchard are upcoming and destined to be all but ignored.

Hev will face either Genie or Nao Hibino, neither of which are terrible for a $100K SF, though her friendship with the former might be a complicating factor.

Why waste checking a stat

Katie would / could have been the 11th youngest player in the top 100.

Onwards, can make the top 100 in style at the US Open although there that may need qualification and a R1 win ( which would really be doing it in style ). Qualification itself would be a net 10 points gain.

Well done Heather, now win the whole thing !

On Twitter, a 5-minute poll at the start of the 3rd set split 59%-41% to Katie. I'd have voted for Hev (just) for the reasons a few people here mentioned but yes, when checking up on Brits' opponents, I've come across a few players with CH 101 or 102 (Rogowska would have been the first one to come to my mind too, since she's been a GB opponent many times!), plus the odd CH 100 who'd be devastated if they used Tarithmetic, so it's never guaranteed you'll 'make it soon' until you've crossed the line and enough potential overtakers are out.

Hopefully not the case here, but slightly different scenario's - Rogowska was 14 months older than Katie when at her career high, but more importantly, she had benefited from NINE grand slam MDWC by that stage which is insane, but also shows she was at a different stage of her career then than where Katie is now.

Definitely a different situation for Katie. She effectively lost a year to injury and then spent the best part of another year just hauling herself back to where she was and so it will be quite the achievement when she does make it.

I think these are the players this millennium to have a CH between 101 and 110
Data is complete from 01/01/2000 through 25/06/2018 (hence Katie is not on the list)

I forgot all about Louise Latimer - forever stranded on 107

Good to see Heather returning to some form and gaining a bit of confidence again. Now she's beaten Katie, may she go on to win the whole thing.
As for all the pessimistic looking at all those stuck for eternity with CH's just below 100... well interesting stats, but nothing to do with Katie, since she will be inside the top 100 very soon, as noted by themptyvessel, her trajectory has been very different and she has blasted upwards over the last year, and nowhere near the peak of her ability level yet. When she starts to get near the top 50 maybe do such an analysis...

Heather faces EWS friend and frequent doubles partner, Nao Hibino WR 130 in the SF.
Both Canadians lost - maybe if their matches had been streamed...
The other SF is betweeen two qualifiers, albeit one of them is former WR 30, Misaki Doi.
