I think its humidity not just heat. In the first set, which is the only one I watched, Gabi was constantly using her towel to wipe herself and to dry her hands.
PaulM said earlier that it was 29 degrees - that isn't that hot by US standards (it was officially 31 in Chiswick on Tuesday), but the humidity is the killer.
Here's a question: has this tournament seen the largest number of retirements or w/o's given by GB players? And if not, what was?
I think so.
From analysing Jeff Sackmann's Tennis Abstract data, I can only count RET or W/O not withdrawals. I can't check ITF qualifying, just MD, but WTA qualifying & MD is included, as is Fed Cup.
The most I can find in the last decade is 2, which has happened on 6 separate occasions, the last being at this $10K in Nottingham in 2016, when Sabrina bamburac retired after 1 game of her R32 match, and WC Lauryn John-Baptise retired in the QF at 3-6 2-2.
The worst week overall in the last decade has been 4 losses by RET or W/O overall, weeks of: 02/05/2011: RETS: Whybourn, Alpay, Elliott Melrose at events in $25K Bukhara, $10K Istanbul, $10K Edinburgh (x2), respectively 26/05/2014: RETS: Konotoptseva, Thomas, Boulter at events in $10K Sharm, $10K Bol (x2) respectively; W/O: Covington in $10K Tarsus
So, yeah, this event & week is horrible beyond all reason
Sabine Lisicki also retired yesterday a set and a half into her match with Ann Li.
Vancouver entry list is still as it was - Gabi and Katy D are still on it; Katie S withdrew yesterday, presumably at the same time she withdrew from the L16 in Landisville.
I'm sure Hermione Granger would have something to say about Landisville.
There are further retirements today in both the first two matches. The first is a doubles match that lasts only 5 games, and the second is a singles QF, where Priscilla Hon's Ukrainian opponent retires mid way through the second set. The third match, another singles QF, is actually into a 3rd set and has been over two hours long. I imagine the full emergency medical services are standing by.
Well the final of this wretched tournament has gone true to form. Madison Brengle, who 'beat' Gabi when she was medevaced at 1 set all, won the final against Kristie Ahn 6-4 1-0 retired.... There is still a doubles final to come for the last four + Madison standing.
