Week 31 - ITF ($25K) - Woking, GBR Hard

That second set was Jodie's - had her name on it. :(

Game, set and match to Ozgen 6-3 7-5

Pity. There was a set point at *5-4 and a break point at 5-6* as well.

Glad to see a win for Freya, much though I love Fran's game. Concur with everyone above though - at Wimbledon, Freya was slicing and chopping way too much on the forehand for no obvious reason. It struck me as nervousness at the time - perhaps worried about overhitting. But can't help but think it needs to be used more judiciously, especially when her 'normal' groundstrokes are good.

What's Freya's coaching set-up at the moment. ?

There appear to be quite a number of issues either in strategy or in keeping to strategy.

Hope though for now that this win can give her added confidence and that she can build on it.

Eden lost 6-4 6-3 to the #4 seed so today in singles just 1 out of 5 through with Freya coming from the all British match.

Miffed I missed the Freya/Francesca match
Well done Freya. May the Boulter-Dart-Taylor vanguard drag others upwards in their wake in belief that they too can compete at higher and higher levels as readily if they follow the example being set for them; Freya very much in that group of hopeful benficiaries.

Generally a disappointing returnfrom Woking this week, all going essentially as expected, and little sign of carrying promise suggested elsewhere back home.

Doubles:
R16: Barnett/Lumsden (GBR/GBR) 1037 lost to Smitkovic/Vrljic (CZE/CRO) 1042 2-6 4-6 [9-11]
R16: Christie/Murray (GBR/GBR) [3] 642 defeated Paladini Jennings/Wooller (GBR/GBR) UNR (both UNR) 6-1 6-0

Still at JTC - switched from Mark Taylor to Beechy, but I suspect Mark may be looking after her again - he was out in Canada with the girls.

Freya is the only non seed to make the quarters. All bar 7th seed Marcinkevica (who Fran disposed of) made it through.

I'd like Smitkova to win if Freya doesn't, she's #1 seed and probably has the most talent of the field but she seems a nice girl as well. Had a conversation with her at Ilkley the other month and she just about understood my accent biggrin. She's won 2 events in the UK in 2018 so clearly enjoys playing here. I see her match with Ozgen is due the same time as Freya's (10.30am) - would have preferred Freya to have been on first and if Freya won then I'd have probably wanted Ozgen to win as well to probably make it an easier semi final for Freya.

Colin was with her at Surbiton though.

Either way, she should be doing a lot better. (As, indeed, should Jodie, although Freya's issues are a lot clearer).

Hopefully today might be a good one....

Great to see Freya giving it a bit more 'ooomph'.

She was 1-3 down but has broken back to 3-3

Freya broke again and served for the set but got broken back.

She played well though, it wasn't a 'feeble' getting broken back, just give it to the other player sort or game .....

Freya had a SP and a makeable passing shot on her backhand but it's never easy when it's an important point and she just missed it.

Into a tb....

Freya was quickly 1-5 down and did will to come back but ended up losing the tie-break 5-7
