I'll be happy if 2 qualifying there. Thought Jodie may have had a good chance but that H2H isn't too encouraging and it' crazy how their matches at the same location have resulted in the exact same score about 8 months apart.

Maia probably has the best chance of the 3 I'd think.

Looking at the odds, Jodie is 11/8, Eden 4/1 and Maia 5/1. I initially thought Jodie would have a half decent chance but that H2H was a bit alarmingly. Beaten twice comprehensively but she has had a largely decent few months so fingers crossed.

Cracking win for Fran. Shows she's ready for 25K level. Interesting battle between her and Freya next.

Really tough to know who to support here.  Freya probably needs the win more, but I love Fran..... Shame either has to lose.

Tough indeed, big fan of both but I'm just about pulling for Freya. I agree that she does probably need the win more, a few years older and lower ranked and a million miles away from her career high. Fran is coming into this on the back of another title and already has a great win over a seed here so she can be pretty content whatever happens, but from Freya's perspective, a win over a Q and then losing to a 17 year old compatriot, won't necessarily be seen as progress.

Good luck to both though and hope it's a good match and more importantly, that it's streamed biggrin

I don't think the fact that it's a Q is a problem - the Q player was still ranked a fair bit higher than Freya herself (as she was a wildcard) so it's not like beating a Q if you're in the draw as of right and the Q is some way below you. It was a good win.

Match against Fran should be streamed as it's on court 1 tomorrow.

Thought the opponent was ranked in the 700's (but realise that was Eden's, albeit a youngster so you'd expect that will improve anyway). Yes, good win as she was 50 places above her. I think they were both 5/6 in the odds so as much chance to go out as to progress. I suppose in reality, if you are a WC then even getting a win is a good return, but I do personally still think this is more important for Freya

Oh yes, I wasn't disagreeing with you, Ace V - the match must surely be more important to Freya and, as you say, for that reason alone, if one has to go for one or the other, Freya gets the vote. Just trying to bump up her first win a bit smile

That was a weird set of tennis from the two Brits - 3-0 to Freya, 4 games then to Fran, 2 games to Freya and she serves for it.....

A tie-break was the fair result.

And if you think that the glory should go to the more aggressive player (which seems fair enough) then quite right and proper that Fran won the first set.

NB Maia is losing....

So, in the end, Freya gets the third set 6-2

Fran was having problems with her hip/leg in that set although, in Andy style, it was more problems between the points than actually during the points.
But she plays with fine margins and a tiny drop due to fatigue/pain/whatever changes everything.
Freya kept steady, still way too many chippy choppy forehands though. She reminds me in many ways of Kiki Mlad., especially as Kiki was a couple of years ago - tall, good serve, good hands, but a little flat footed at times, doesn't get to the net much (which is a shame) and strangely lacking in penetration often in her ground shots, and therefore way too quick to chip the ball when actually she's got plenty of time to hit it properly.

Surprised that Freya won that but good for her. Hoping she can keep going now.

Hum....

99% sure Jodie just screamed at herself 'Jodie, just HIT the ball - you've been watching Freya to much'....

She's not wrong.....didn't get all those A levels for nothing....

But got broken all the same when she shouldn't have.

Now 3-4*

but there will be more chances...

Jodie broke very early in the second set, played a good set, served for it at 5-4, long difficult game - and ended up losing it.
Now 5-5

Jodie got the early break in the second set but missed a pretty straightforward set point at 5-4 *A-40 and has just been broken back so 3-6 5-5*
