Week 31 - ITF ($25K) - Woking, GBR Hard

A decent effort ends in defeat, sadly. And there ends our singles involvement in Woking.

(4) Andreea Amalia Rosca ROM d. WC Freya Christie GBR 7-6(5) 6-3

There was only three points in it in that match of Freya's......

It was the best I've seen her play in ages.

Shame about the result but not all doom and gloom.

In fact, although maybe I'm only seeing what I want to see, but having watched a lot of those matches over the past few days, it seems clear (based just on this event) that Eden (at 516), Freya (at 562 ), Jodie (at 458) and Alicia (at 536) are all playing a good deal better than their rankings. (Fran too. Didn't see any of Beth's match as it wasn't streamed but it probably applies to her too. Not so sure about Maia but why not).

Yes, some decent performances though I would guess with players that when all else is equal that they generally perform a bit better at 'home'.

Be an interesting group to follow. Who of that 'second tier' can really pull away firmly into the GB top 10 and say move into initially the top 400 but then towards the top 300.

The GB #11 to #20 currently range from Maia WR 411 to Emily App WR 613.

After our very clear top 8 are first #9 Laura WR 360 ( who will clearly create one top 10 vacancy before she returns ) and #10 Tara WR 399.

Be great if some really significantly push on.

I'm not up to speed with the second tier yet, (only just getting my head around the relationships in the 100-200 batch), who is in our next batch?

As Indi says, GB #11-20 range. There are 8 aged between 17 and 24 that could well progress upwards quite a bit with a few good results. Have a look at Steven's table and look at the rankings and points.

The full GB #9 to #20 players ranked WR 360 to 613, in 30/07 ranking order are :

Laura, Tara, Maia, Jodie, Beth, Fran, Sam, Eden, EWS, Alicia, Freya and Emily App.

Most of these are still relatively young with no doubt aspirations to go much higher. Some like Laura ( on her return), Tara and Sam would clearly like to get back up the rankings. And I just admire EWS

Indeed so much better than my simple list. A mine of information and so worth advertising :

Yes, and Emma Rad is obviously in that list too if you factored in a proper number of counting tournaments.

As you say, the youth of many is encouraging (although, like you, I have a soft spot for the 'oldies' and - as said - think they are important for our tennis scene).

Nearly missed it - doubles under way. Both Emily/Andrea and Beth/Olivia/Eden on the stream.

Edit: Almost forgot Eden

Beth/Olivia/Eden should certainly have the court well covered.

Shame for Freya, sounds like she competed well. Hope Smitkova can take this now.
