Week 25 - ITF ($100k) - Ilkley, Grass

Harriet at WR189CH on live rankings - another win would put her one point in front of Gabi.

Saw some of Harriet 's match. She was a bit ropy on her serve in the second half of of the first set but was otherwise very impressive.

Also saw the last bit of of Maia's match. Kanepi looked huge size wise in comparison and it was her weight of shot that looked the difference.

But for arguably your best prospect to be broken 4 times and not to have a single break point (or even a deuce) and barely muster up 8 points in 8 return games is pretty poor whichever way you look at it - it's certainly a far cry from losing so narrowly last week to the far more renowned grass specialist Vekic anyway.

Arguably is the right adverb.  Katie Boulter has (arguably) a bigger game and more potential than Gabi to make it to the next level.  Gabi is a solid performer with a great mindset but limited weapons.  Doing well right now though, which is great.

It's far from clear either that they are out best two prospects with the way Harriet has come on this year and with the younger Katie Swan progressing. It's great having such a group. Numbers give more chance that one or two will really make it, especially if each others' successes help give the others just a bit extra push.

Re Gabi, she's surely allowed maybe a bit of an off day for her against a good grass player, especially when it was being acknowledged how close she got last week against Vekic.

Last three games look as if they were pretty close

Wow. Daley/Holtum have just won the 1st set on a TB against opponents with a combined ranking of 242

Katie Swan played very well in the bits I saw of the match. One thing I was unimpressed with was the way she spoke to the ball boys. Doesn't seem to know what the words please and thank you mean.

So only Kyle and Harriet win R1 matches across 4 grass court tournaments. Thats not ideal Wimbledon prep, maybe thats where the thoughts are to be fair. And with the money of offer you cant blame them. Even qualifying has its rewards, winning one round worth the same as a tournament win just about.

I'm sure I heard her swear when watching an ITF on some stream earlier in the year. Okay, pressure can get to people at times and she is still young but I just sense she has been a bit spoilt at times - if that is the right word (or wrong word!).
