I dont, I have to be honest I expected him to do very well. The top juniors in the world and I would include George in that group are just a different type of athlete when compared to the guys you generally find in the draw here. A very sensible way to get your foot in the door before stepping up to more competitive fields, hopefully a few more points next week and he will be able to dodge qualifying although I am sure his focus is on the juniors at RG. Very exciting times and a real prospect.
Yes. A 16/17 year-old top junior who hasn't played adults is going to be about ATP 1000 level straight off, very approx.
That's about where you would put them if they had to have an administrative ranking.
So, given the level of this field, the results were not surprising as such.
What was excellent, though, is that juniors often lack consistency - great one day, can't repeat it the next - don't deal well with rain-breaks, say, or 'pro tactics' on the other side of the net designed especially to get a rise out of them, etc. etc.
So though each result was not a major surprise in itself, the run of them was very commendable, in my view. I wonder who he's over there with?
NB I saw the posts from the British High Commissioner in Uganda supporting George which I thought were cute.
Agreed it is a bit unpredictable in general but after watching a player for a bit you get a feel for how they will develop and every now and then players come along whose movement is fluid, who have a bit of time and most importantly if they have their head in the game they stand a very good chance of progressing rapidly, Tyler will be a good test. A focused, intelligent college player will used to seeing off young talents.
From watching George last year, and listening to the noises the coaches were making, I got the feeling that keeping his head in the game was not always George's strong point. Which is strange because he has closed out lots of tight matches.
But it's true that he looks a bit 'vacant' or 'dreamy' on court some times - as noted last year, he has wonderful talent, above the norm, and a pick for me above Jack and Anton, though they have very good qualities too. But he looks a little AWOL at times. And this was getting the coaches very animated - it's obviously an issue for them.
However, to be honest, it may be that that keeps him chilled, and focused more on the tennis itself rather than the score, and so more able to play properly and freely.
So, personally, I'm not always sure that it's such a bad thing. (Tsonga was famous for never knowing the score, and not being 'match' focused, and it didn't do him any real harm).
Tyler will be interesting but there may be a 'let-down' effect from last week.
That sound about right.
There have been some coaching changes at JTC.
Mark Taylor and David Felegate seem to be looking after the boys
Beechy and Morgan Phillips the older girls and Lucy Ahl the junior girls and Jodie.
i won't go into detail but it relates to a non league football team, with no ground who won a play off final after a penalty shoot out in front of 3321 fans, they are now only 2 divisions from the football league. The blazing sun has scrambled my brain more than usual.
Well definitely worth it if we get back to champion hill, I know the route from champion hill to Peckham Rye too well it was our pre training warm up on a Monday nights, finishing with Sprints up Dog kennel Hill.
