Week 42 - Challenger ($50,000+H) - Las Vegas NV, USA (hard)

I'd take Monica Niculescu to beat Opelka any day of the week, regardless of how well he happened to be serving. Her use of spin would be absolute torture for him.

Anyone have the slightest clue why Liam was attempting lobs against a 6'11 opponent whose volleying skills were at best ordinary and at worst, inept ?

For a bet ?   confuse

Congratulations to Liam, I think it's the best outcome GB wise as it gives Cam a break and a boost for Liam. He has a great chance to win this now.

And yes also well played Vandy, right again you are indeed.

A solid if not spectacular performance from Liam. Quite a few basic errors from Opelka in the last set, but Liam did well to hang in there against serve and take his chance when he got it.

Without wanting to jinx him...I've got a good feeling about this week, his games in a good place and I think he seems stronger mentally than before. He was on the wrong end of a dodgy line call serving at 3-2 in the last set, but he quickly regained his composure and won the game, whereas in the past I think it would have affected him more.

A good week whatever happens now, looking forward to the semi final tomorrow!

Agree with Spaced, think that some are being a little too critical of LB, I think that when someone's smashing aces and swinging at everything, its tough to get your rhythm so in that context, a pretty good win, and hope he can turn a good week into a great one.

Jesus Christ can we give Liam some credit please? In a match where he had no rhythm I thought he did wel!

No doubt rythym or rather lack of it did effect Liam so most probably a reason he himself made so many errors. Make them he did though and with Opelka really wayward off the ground for much of the match it simply wasn't a very good match.

He has though undoubtably above been given varying degrees of credit, certainly some. As can often be the case there are a variety of appraisals and different emphasises. As I said "well done" while not putting the match into my memory bank. A good one to win and move on from.

If Liam actually goes on to win this event, and why not, he could equal his career high or be very close (CH is 158). Good luck to him, as a Yorkshireman and Leeds Fan, congratulating a Mancunian doesnt sit easily but eh, these are weird times we live in!

Also interesting to note the players Liam has beaten this year. Good wins against Mannarino and Bemelmens both of whom are semi finalists in ATP events this week. If you look at Liam's results since March just about every defeat has been against a player playing ATP level at the moment, bar Fairfield last week when he really should have won.

So it's looking good that Liam could maybe join Cam in the top 100 by springtime. Keep going Liam lad and concentrate on singles only like Cam primarily does.

Yes always good to see a bit of banter here and there I did see that on twitter, banter is accepted more places than others it seems having said that.

Liam seems like a good northern lad and is starting to reap the rewards of some hard work. Maturing into a decent lad as well.

That made me laugh too - I wasn't able to follow the 2nd set closely so I didn't actually know who had broken first, but good to see Liam standing up for himself! Another tweeter (Steven Morris) couldn't resist adding "against Opelka everyone's short"

Cracking win! Beating a servebot is all about getting your eye in and then finding a way! He found it And how can you resist trying to lib someone who is 611 , Andy cant help himself!

And congratulations to Indi who has made me chortle twice in one day with his spot betting reference (I understand there is an ongoing irregular betting activity investigation around lobbing) and Glaswegian Cows.
