Boys & Girls: 2017 US Open Juniors - Grade A (Week 36)

The draw for qualifying takes place later today, with qualifying matches (starting tomorrow) usually viewable via the US Open website scoreboard. Aidan McHugh and Emily Appleton are direct acceptances, with Barnaby Smith also possibly getting in if there have been late withdrawals. If not he joins George Loffhagen, Jack Draper and Ali Collins (hopefully recovered after last week's retirement) in qualifying.  Katie Swan withdrew last week.

I hope KS withdrew due to thinking playing another jnr slam would be a total waste of her time, rather than due to any fitness issue. She must feel like she has graduated jnr competitions, so the motivation when sitting in a draw can't be the same as it once was. So even if in her mind she thinks they are 'easy mode' compared with pro competitions, she won't be able to find the performances needed.

Looking forward to see what Emily, Ali and Aiden can do. Particularly Aiden, coached by Leon Smith's brother. And I know of at least one person here who will be looking out for George's results.

Barnaby is top seed in the qualis - shame he didn't sneak into the main draw....He plays the guy Aidan beat in R1 this week in Canada.

QR1 Boys:

(q1) Barnaby Smith (GBR) v Jesper de Jong (NED)

(q6) George Loffhagen (GBR) v Gilbert Soares Klier Jr (BRA)

Barnaby is the first on court and he has swapped sets with Jesper, losing the first 2-6 but winning the second 6-4

 I think I saw he was *5-3 - pity, but it was a long match - almost three hours for three sets

We have our first winner as Ali battles from a set and a break down to win her match. George is a set up and jack is into a decider

Gosh, that was right royal battle for Ali. That second set was nip and tuck.
And the young American only turned 14 a few months back.....

What a fantastic experience preparing for and playing this tournament at any level is for these players even Barnaby with a very tight first round qualifying loss it is definitely a more valuable experience than playing in the junior national U18's a week or so back. Horses for courses so to speak and great to see jack, George and Ali still in the running.

 Weird... the ITF site still has the other lad as being his opponent, i.e. copying and pasting this morning:

George LOFFHAGEN (GBR) [6]     6-3 3-6 6-4     Gilbert SOARES KLIER JUNIOR (BRA)

And yet the US Open site has the Italian boy.

Guess the ITF one is wrong and not updated....

However, George won (just) and, as you say, that's really all that matters

Well done, all three. Shame for Barnaby. But more of the same - in two shorter sets, please?

(And still don't agree about the nationals, Oakie - just change their date, if you have to ).

Jack gets the boy who beat Barnaby in Canada. All the girls matches are up first off today, followed by the boys

Ali had a tough time of it, but at least finished strongly rallying from 1-6 0-4 or 0-5 to 1-6 3-6 (perhaps still affected by whatever caused her retirement 2 weeks ago). George and jack are faring better, with Jack a set and a break up, while George is into a decider which he leads 3-0
