£2,500 per tournament... tennis is still very much an elitist sport
Seems rather on the high side. Yes, it can be expensive ( and certainly relative to lower level prize money ) but I'm sure Billy and his van ( OK, a bit extreme ) do it a darn sight cheaper than that.
I recall some discussions on estimated all-in costs over a period a while ago regarding what Dan Cox and others had reportedly said, and Neil Pauffley's then girlfriend posted a figure and a kind of breakdown that roughly tied in with the others. I forget what that figure was though.
I understood Eden's figure to be for her and her Dad. (It's not clear-cut but that's how it comes across to me). So that's extra airfare, food and maybe hotel room, depending whether they share or not.
The figure that was quoted before, for a year's worth of travel/tournament expenses, was about GBP 20-25k for the year. I've also seen French quotes of between EUR 20-40k. And one of the Bothwell's once said it was about 1k per tournament.

That figure is high. It is based probably on air travel for two people to a non European destination, plus accommodation and meal expenses for two people for a week, since Eden was referring also to her father travelling with her as coach/ mentor. First, if you are travelling in Europe, and even if as a pair, flights would be less expensive, and second these days it is often easier to find cheaper accommodation. Third, if you were travelling further afield so flights were more expensive, presumably you'd be doing it in a way that it would cover several tournaments. So all in all that figure is way too high for me for an aspiring player playing largely futures tournaments. I travel a lot myself for walk and since I work with NGOs mainly, I am also well used to the more budget end of travel costs, even if definitely not Billy and his van style. But £2500 per tournament, nah...

Yes, good point CD and I'm pretty sure you're right. I was thinking Eden was living the high life !
I don't know at all their general financial position but a £2,500 average may be what they are prepared to pay together not absolutely scrimping. So pairing it back a bit and for just the player a tournament average of £1,000 or say £20K-25K a year may again actually tie in.
Although the article does refer to costs per tournament, I wonder if some of the additional costs were lumped in with it - equipment, physio etc.
£2500 for two for a week is a lot of money - I spend a decent amount on holidays in Europe, but nothing like that, even with flights, hotels, car hire and eating out.
Yes I thought £2.500 sounded high too, but even a lower figure of £1,000 per tournament still makes the junior and pro circuits an impossible dream for many

Watched a bit of Eden's match on the (dodgy) stream, and she seemed to slice almost every single backhand....not to use as an approach shot, but just as a general go-to. Which didn't seem to work very effectively for her...unless it's well-placed, you're giving your opponent a lot more time to line up a shot, it seems to me?

Yes. I agree. And yet she has a very good double handed backhand.
My feeling is that she's 'got away' with slicing it, when in the slightest bit of trouble, at the lower level events and so it's become a habit, a go-to shot. And, yes, her opponent today murdered her on it.
It's one of the problems with staying with 15ks too long, and some coaches; hopefully as she looks to be more ambitious she'll realise there's no point just slicing it gently back into play.
Freya's rubbish at tie-breaks
That's her fifth one of the year, and she's lost them all.
And now a quick break down in the second set, too.
6-7(6) 0-2*
