I thought it was a low quality affair. Most of the key points in the match were just awful, Marcus being especially guilty. Liam's forehand was marginally better than Naomi's. A few delightful rallies during the routine holds.
Congratulations to Marcus, and commiserations to Liam. Would be fantastic if our three remaining contenders could emulate the achievements Steven mentioned on the previous page. Fingers crossed for them all.
Great to have 3 men through to the FQR. Gutted for Liam, but somebody had to lose today. As for the FQR matches, you would have to say that Marcus and Jay have good chances. Alex has about a 20% chance again, which should mean he will go and win his match as well.
Really thought Liam would beat Marcus. Not being unkind but Marcus just does not look fit. He still talks about wanting to get up their with the higher ranked players but he is going to have to work enormously on his fitness. He's a nice guy but I can't get excited about his future prospects in the same way as Cameron and Jay. Hopefully he will prove all the doubters wrong and get up there.
He is twice the man he was when you were managing him.
The mind boogles as to what he would have been capable of if he had shown consistent commitment through his transition from juniors to senior tennis. That said he is on the cusp of a second consecutive appearance at Wimbledon which is good work if you can get it, its almost as if he is a grass court hustler but he's hustling the pros!

Alex Ward smashed it out the park. Picked up playing where he'd left off in the third set on Monday and just didn't give Soeda chance to breathe. Hits his spots on his serve. Hit the lines on his groundies. Half way through the second set Soeda just looked at his bench and gestured to them in a sort of 'well, what can I do?' sort of way.
And Jay was dead impressive again. Good strong tennis but the mental side in particular. He had two match points before the tie-break. One was an unreturnable serve. But in the second, Ymer missed his first serve and put up a doddy second serve. And Jay tried his Grosjean style, jumping in the air, take it early backhand. It's not a great shot, really, even when it goes over the net. Which it normally doesn't. And this one didn't either. You might have thought he'd let it get to him a bit, as a bad miss on a crucial point. But not at all. And he played a really strong tie-break too. All credit to him, excellent display.
NB I wonder if the two know each other from Sweden (Jay used to train there for a while). I got the feeling when they shook hands at the end that they were good friends. (Or maybe they're just friendly guys ).
Anyway, with Marcus too, (and shame for Liam but only one can win), it was certainly a great day for the men.

Thanks for the report, CD. One of Jay's tweets implied they were good friends, so you weren't imagining it!

He looked to me like he was a bit puffed playing 3 sets......marriage and fatherhood definitely suiting him......more than a hint of muffin top wobbling around under that T-Shirt!!! But why? He's been talking the talk all year, and I know he's been injured a bit and maybe couldn't work out but he could have watched his diet a little bit. He's clearly got the skill and the desire to play at least around the challenger/ATP overlap just seemingly no self-discipline.
For me Marcus is another Dan. So I've no real confidence in him - at least Dan realised and put the work in at least for a while. Also I dislike that way the Beeb are reporting it as if he were a celeb, not a lazy fat boy. The people who deserve a mention are Jay and Alex - I mean what a win!
