A Ryder Cup style weekend event. Teams of 6 Europe vs Rest of the World. 4 players selected automatically by ranking and two wildcard picks by the captains (bjorg & mcenroe).
Hosted in Europe one year then USA the next. Scheduled for the weekend after the US Open final.
For me this is just a pointless gimmick of a "tournament". The players already play too much tennis, and many of the top players have already opted (or been forced) out of Davis Cup next week through fatigue and injury.
Whilst the team sheets look exciting on paper, when push comes to shove, we could easily end up with players outside the top 100 competing, just to make up the numbers - unless of course the appearance money is too good to turn down.
The tennis itself could easily turn into a glorified exhibition tournament.
I think most people agree that the Davis Cup being an annual event doesn't work, look at this year for example. Until that moves to a better format there will always be rival products offered such as this. Maybe we could host the Davis Cup alternate years to something like this. I also think the Davis Cup should be more than the efforts of potentially just 3 players per match.
It looked really good - I like innovation when it means something and this appeared to mean something. Nick K appeared more distressed losing to Fed in the last match than he did losing his DC semi last weekend - food for thought indeed!
I am sure there are flaws to iron out before they go again next season in Chicago but a good start
