Week 19 - ATP Masters 1000 - Internazionali BNL d'Italia - Rome, Italy (clay)

L64:  BYE vs (2) Andy Murray WR 2

He'll play Borna Coric or a qualifier in the last 32.

Andy has Berdych in his quarter and Wawrinka as a probable semi final opponent. Djokovich has to get through Nadal in his quarter and then would probably face Federer in the semi final. I think Andy will be quite happy about that.

Whatever happens to Mr Murray, the Djokovic/Nadal quarter is a candidate for worst clay quarter draw ever for all its inhabitants: Djokovic, Cuevas, Mahut, Bellucci, Monfils, Raonic, Kyrgios, Kohlschreiber, Nadal and a few qualifiers. That's just brutal.

Great fun when we come to the clay season with Nadal a loose cannon outside the top 4 seeds

Might not smile if he lands in Andy's quarter for the French Open, although he might usurp Wawrinka for WR 4 ( and 4th seeding ) prior to the French Open, ah Wawrinka, the French Open champion ...

R2/L32: (2) Andy Murray WR 3 vs (Q) Mikhail Kukushkin (KAZ) WR 87 (CH 46 05/10/15)

H2H 3-0 : Two Aussie hard court in 2012 and last time Wimbledon R1 in 2015, straight but quite close sets. Never met on clay.

3rd on Grandstand on Wednesday with play starting on that court at 11 am local, 10 am BST

Winner plays (15) Bautista Agut or Chardy in the L16

And Stephane Robert has taken Novak Djokovic to 7-5 5-5 (at present). Sometimes I just don't understand ... why can't he have these days against Mr Murray?

Maybe the question is: why can't Stéphane Robert have one of these days more often?  smile

Both/and? Don't know which is the stronger, not having seen the match. But I do know that occasionally in early rounds, Mr Djokovic can play peculiarly badly against lower-ranked players.

Hmm. Having played his first match as the lone member of the Big Four on the Grandstand instead of the Centre Court, tomorrow, he's the lone member of the Big Four ... on court Pietrangeli (though with "possible court change"). A little respect? Though I suppose as all the other members of his side of the bracket are also off Centre Court, and the SFs are bound to be on Centre Court, at least it's not putting him at a competitive disadvantage. And it could be worse: though if you will comprehensively demolish the game of the home town favourite on Centre Court, I suspect you shouldn't be surprised to be relegated to the outer courts the next day!

Federer has been beaten by Dominic Thiem which means Andy will move back to WR2 on Monday regardless of his results for the rest of the week.

Only a matter of Thiem before we see Dominic in the top 10 and making the latter stages of Slams.
