RE: Week 46 - ATP World Tour Finals - London (Hard)

Must be a mental nightmare playing that little road ferret on a slow court, requiring almost perfect execution point after point to outplay him. Just as well Ferrer's serve let him down today.

If my maths is right, a win for Andy today followed by Nole beating Fed tomorrow is enough to guarantee Andy the Nş2 spot at the end of the year. For me, DC is priority over everything, so if he doesn't make it out of the group, I won't be worried at all.

First leg accomplished biggrin

Well that was relatively painless . I managed to watch on the TV, too, though it did leave me wanting to throw a brick at Castle.

I guess such a slow court is not unhelpful re transitioning to clay next week. I would think some clay courts play quicker than the O2 is.

Rafa beat Stan 6-3 6-2 so we will have ::

Wednesday : (2) Murray vs (5) Nadal

Friday : (2) Murray vs (4) Wawrinka

Thought Rafa / Stan was going to be a good match.  Started well enough, but then such a disappointment, Stan just tanked it.  I'd have been annoyed if I'd bought a ticket to see it as opposed to watching on TV (although the dubs were undeniably good value!)

While I haven't done any form of statistical analysis, my impression is that in recent years the WTF has been a succession of dismally uncompetitive matches. And of course the Round Robin format lends itself 3rd match non-events, with tedious "Nadal needs to win at least 6 games against Berdych to get to the semi-finals" stuff.

Maybe that's one of the reasons why ticket sales this year seem to have been disappointing. (The company I work for used to go big on client entertainment at the WTF, but no more.) And tennis is fundamentally an outdoor sport to be watched sitting in the sun - there's something chilling about sitting in a huge dark arena. Maybe they should have the WTF in the southern hemisphere and play it outside.

Well that's blown that theory.

Fed beats Novak in straight sets.

Second leg not. Fed beat Nole 7-5 6-2

Helps though in the err longer term chase after Nole's number 1 spot

And still one more win for Andy or loss for Fed will seal that end of year number 2 spot before we get to the Davis Cup.

It would be just Andy's luck to finally top a group and then draw Nole anyway.

Indeed, it would, but that's not gonna happen now!

Disappointing match from Andy - but I have divided feelings about this tournament anyway. If he doesn't get to the semi - where he would have a good chance to be flattened again by an inspired Federer - he will have more time to get on the clay ready for next weekend.

I don't want him to get through. I am hoping he'll retire and prep for DC. He's had his match practise.

I think once Andy lost the 1st set, he did the right thing, no point digging really deep, with next week in mind. A solid performance might be enough against Stan, if not next week is more important.
